Fire poses some threat to nesting peregrines although not much can be done about it and it is a natural part of life for peregrines.
Site 5 has had a troubled last two years. Firstly, almost all of the pair's home range was burned in a fire in 1997. This pair failed to breed in 1998, possibly due to reduced availability of prey. This site was visited on several occasions, during which it was noted that there were very few prey species about. The peregrines did not appear to be interested in human presence at their usual eyrie.
In 1999, the female from the site was hit and killed by a car. At the time it was trying to carry away a galah that it had killed. The eyrie contained one young that perished as a result of the death of the female adult. It will be interesting to see how long it takes the male to find another mate and also to see if they use the same eyrie.
