[Show
listed information on paper/whiteboard from last lesson
about land and marine hermit crabs]
"Today
we will be learning more about hermit crabs, such as
where they live, what they eat and read a story about
a marine hermit crab called Pagoo."
Discussion:
"Who
can tell me where a marine hermit crab lives?"
[In
the ocean and in rockpools - show picture of marine
hermit crab in water/ocean]
"That's
right. The marine hermit crab lives in water. They are
often seen in rockpools and on the beach."
"Who
can tell me where a land hermit crab lives?"
[On
land / in trees / among the leaf litter / in sand .
Show students a picture/photo of hermit crab in the
wild among leaf litter/climbing trees/on sand]
"Yes,
land hermit crabs live on land. Some live in trees and
many hide in leaf litter during the day to keep out
of the heat of the day and stay safe from other animals.
Land hermit crabs can drown in water because they have
lungs like we do, not gills like marine hermit crabs."
Exposition:
"Land
and marine hermit crabs both start their lives in the
ocean, where they spend around a year growing, moulting
and develop into mature hermit crabs. The land hermit
crab leaves the water to live on land. It loses its
ability to breathe under water and develops lungs to
breathe air with. Marine hermit crabs spend their life
in the ocean and in rock pools, sometimes they wander
on beaches in search of food. Land hermit crabs often
live more than one kilometre away from the ocean. Most
only return to the water's edge to release eggs into
the ocean and to find shells."
Story
:
Read
the book "Pagoo"
[if
necessary, over a series of lessons].
Note: Pagoo tells the story of a marine hermit crab
who grows from a baby hermit crab, a zoea, into a mature
hermit crab over a period of time. It also covers issues
such as borrowed shells, molting, food and marine life.
Question
and Answer time:
Give
students some time to ask questions or talk about the
story and/or other things they have learned today.
Conclusion
:
"We
have learned many things about hermit crabs today. We
have learned that some hermit crabs live on land while
others live in the sea. We have looked at photos of
hermit crabs and listened to the story Pagoo. Next lesson/week/time
we will learn more about the land hermit crab and study
it closely. We will also be learning the names of body
parts of a hermit crab."
