The best substrate or bedding for land hermit crabs is beach sand. If you can't get that then the second best thing is Oolitic or Aragonite sand. The most popular is washed play sand due to the low cost. Some crabbers mix it with Coconut Fiber / Coco-Peat at a ratio of 8 parts sand to 1 part coconut fiber. The sand should be moistened to sandcastle consistency so that hermit crabs can dig down to moult. They make tunnels that can cave in if the substrate isn't suitable.
Avoid the Calci-Sand and Hermit Crab sands that you see in stores as they are not suitable for land hermit crabs.
Other substrates to avoid include:
- Wood shavings
- Corn shavings
- Cedar shavings
- Substrates for desert animals
- Fir shavings
- Krabooz Zuper Zands
