Born and raised in Sea Lake, Cameron McClelland has been offered the rare opportunity as sponsored driver for the 2006 Australian Off Road Championship in a new Raptor Class 2 buggy.
Cameron has been exposed to Off Road Racing for over 15 years, as a spectator, pit crew, navigator and owner driver. Connections with Sea Lake Off Road Club have seen Cameron competing in his own right since 2001.
In this short space of time, Cameron has achieved success in all levels of the sport, culminating in outright driver champion for the 2003 Victorian Off Road Championship and 2nd in his preferred class 2 during the 2004 Australian Off Road Championship.
Cameron’s success has come more quickly than expected through hard work, determination and an uncanny natural driving ability. He has spent considerable time and money on preparing both himself and his buggy for competition.
After leaving school Cameron successfully completed an Apprenticeship in Vehicle Body Building and worked full time for Pumpa Engineering. He has also worked as a truck driver for Bailey’s Transport, to help maintain the finances to follow his passion of off road racing.
In 2005 Cameron decided to change his career path and take up a full time position at Bendigo University to study teaching.
Cameron’s outstanding achievements in off road racing gained the attention of Bendigo’s Greg Harris, who has engaged Cameron as his sponsored driver for the 2006 Australian Off Road Championship. This unique sponsorship has come at a perfect time for Cameron, as the financial constraints of being a full time student would have slowed down his opportunities.
Greg has been involved in the sport for the past 20 years as both competitor and vehicle designer. With his background in military design, Greg has gained knowledge to design his latest ‘Raptor’ buggy.
After thousands of hours of development and hundreds of prototype drawings, Greg is pleased that the Raptor is performing to design expectations. Manufacture of the Raptor takes place in Bendigo where fabrication, assembly and testing takes place.
The Raptor buggy made its debut at the first round of the Australian Off Road Championship held over Easter at Hyden which is four hours south east of Perth WA. At the half way point of the race Cameron was running 6th outright and first in his class. A steering bolt failure on the first lap of the last section meant the Raptor had to return to the pits. The pit crew quickly fixed the problem and the Raptor returned to the track. Unfortunately the time lost in the pits moved them to 19th outright and second in class at the completion of competition.
Greg Harris was extremely happy with both the Raptor’s performance and that of his new driver. Greg was heard to say "Cameron only scared me a few times…. We certainly put the Raptor to the test. "
Cameron and Greg will next be competing in the Finke Desert Race, Round 2 of the Australian Off Road Championship held at Alice Spring on the June long weekend.
