Mallee Shield Rd. 2 – Mellool Short Course
April 18, 2009
• Outright winners – Daniel and Chris Monk.
The Sea Lake Off Road Club staged the second round of the Mallee Shield series at Mellool on Saturday, April 18.
The event was held on the Monk family property, east of Swan Hill and attracted 24 starters.
Outright winners were Chris and Daniel Monk in their Extreme 2WD. Ross and Paul Allan were second outright and first Super 1650 buggy, followed by Travis and Gary Conrad in their Super 1650 buggy. Fourth outright and third Super 1650 went to Ken and Jeremy Holt.
Following scruitineering and drivers’ briefing cars were started off for a one lap dash at one minute intervals. The field was then regrouped and sent out two at a time for four laps.
After an hour break competitors set out for the final five laps.
Ian Edelsten was unlucky to blow the motor in his single seater buggy on the last lap of the day whilst in contention for a podium spot.
Paul Walsh and Nic Simmonds were first in Sportsman Class, second went to Neil and Sam Bowles, although they failed to finish the last two laps.
Steve Kanizay and Ash Mayes were first in Performance 2WD with Rod and Brock Lusty second.
Extreme 2WD went to Chris and Daniel Monk. Second was Stephen Collett and Craig Pumpa and third went to Craig Button and David Anderson.
The Pro and Pro Lite class was won by Mick Hannan and brother-in-law Steven Crowe. It was Mick’s first drive in his new buggy. They were a creditable seventh outright.
Second in Pro and Pro Lite went to Russell Monk who had the most consistent huge air over the jump all day.
Special thanks must go to the Monk family for hosting the event, and particularly to Murray and Daniel for their work in setting up the venue, although some of the competitors were a bit apprehensive of Daniel’s ‘Finke bumps.’
