In keeping with the Olympic theme of this issue of Novo, this month’s Cheap and Cheerful comes from the heart of the Olympic City.

Where: Pancakes Australia (10 Hickson Rd, The Rocks, Sydney NSW)

When: Sunday Lunch

What For: A big feed before heading out to Olympic Park

How Much: Approx $60 for four

On the first Sunday of the Olympics, we set out to find a meal in the incredible busy Rocks area of Sydney.  We chose Pancakes.  I am sure that our decision was swayed in someway but the amazing menu presented at the door, that not only lists the dishes, but illustrates them in all their decadent glory.  Like most other places around, there was queue out the door, but the restaurant’s efficient service meant that we were seated in about 10 minutes.

Food

Entrée:  Shared one serve of potato wedges and one serve of pesto and pinenut bread.

Main:   Two plain pancake stacks with whipped butter, Devil’s Delight (chocolate pancakes with chocolate ice cream, fruit and topping) and Strawberry Patch (Plain Pancakes with ice cream, topping and fresh strawberries).

Drinks:  Soft drinks and milk shakes

Our entrées were of a good café standard.  The wedges were actually cut potatoes rather than the processed frozen wedges you get at many other establishments. They were served with generous sides of sour cream and chilli sauce.  The breads were freshly prepared and again the serving generous.

The mains we ordered were all HUGE.  The plain pancake stack that I ordered was made up of two thick, fluffy pancakes topped with a ball of whipped butter.  The pancakes were not doughy or dense, but their sheer size made the meal a filling one.  While I did not sample the other dishes ordered they were made up of the same large fluffy pancakes and were topped generously with ice cream, toppings and fresh fruit.  It was however mentioned that the chocolate pancakes were not quite as nice as the plain pancakes with topping.

Eating at Pancakes is a ‘fun’ experience and the food reflects this.  The dishes we chose for our mains were probably more deserts than lunches but for a mega-filling treat, Pancakes is the place to go.

As well as pancakes the menu offers a large selection of steaks, seafood, crepes and salads.
Service

The service at Pancakes was great.  Despite being amazingly busy on what was the first weekend of the Olympics, we were seated and had our orders taken quite quickly.  The hectic atmosphere meant that we were asked to order a couple of times, but obviously this is much less of a problem than not being asked at all.  The waiting staff maintained a bubbly and friendly air despite being run off their feet.
