In an innovative fictional piece, Novo writers Melanie Fox and Helen Jones take on the personas of Rickie Gilchrist and Saffron Duchesne. Rickie is in year 9, and spends too much time in class writing to Saffron Duchesne, a girl in year 8 at the same school. One day, Rickie received a letter meant for someone else. This is the story of their ensuing correspondence. Melanie Fox writes the letters of Saffron, and Helen the letters of Rickie. Neither writer knows what the other one will write, providing Novo readers with a unique fictional experience. The First Letter G'Day How are you going? I'm shit. I'm in dance studies right now and writing to you because I'm totally pissed at the world. HE hasn't come in a while (which is good!) but I'm not letting my guard down like last time because - well as everyone keeps telling me, it will happen again - and to tell you the truth, I'm not really thinking positively either lately - it's hard to you know. I know I'm bad (in regards to recess time) but I just wanted one today after talking to Nathan's mother yesterday. If I didn't tell you already, that's another reason I'm upset lately. Why is my life so shit ane everyone else's so great??? Anyway, back to Nathan - the long weekend and seeing the beach and all that again helped - I suppose - but it still hurt. I met Brad + Daniel and all them again - they were out surfing, surprise surprise! I hadn't seen them since Nathan's funeral either - but I just couldn't face them again. I'm still having nightmares. It's hard to see someone drown like that. Kate just said "I suppose that's the way to die, doing something you love." But I don't know. I'm not that optimistic about the whole situation. Saffron |
