An electric locomotive with an overhead wire travels back and forth on a short piece of track. Visible wiring connected to the switch shows how the circuit runs between the track, the loco and the overhead wire. Sets of relays underneath control the loco's movement. A 45mm LGB gauge mechanism was chosen to make the setup resistant to being bumped and derailed, as the cabinet housing the interactive is mounted on casters. For a CAD of the loco, click here.
The design brief: Build a robust, reliable, completely safe interactive. How did we go? The only problem was the gantries holding the overhead wire, which were too flimsy and vibrated in a distracting way. The solution was to replace them with less elegant but stiffer solid steel rods, bent to shape.
