Design Interactive

Three vehicle bodies may interchanged on the chassis visible in the foreground. They are released at the entrance of the wind tunnel on the right and roll down to strike a bell at the left hand end. The run is timed by the clock visible at the left hand end. The three bodies are a 1950's F100 utility, a '39 Ford Woody and a modern Ford Falcon, and their length of run varies between 6 and 12 seconds, thus clearly demonstrating their different aerodynamic qualities. The design brief: Design and build a robust, reliable, completely safe interactive which unambiguously demonstrated the difference aerodynamic design can make. How did we go? Very well, with a little judicious design, firstly by blowing air up the tunnel against the cars coming down, and by sizing the tunnel in such a way as to make the larger bodied vehicles constrict the airflow to exaggerate the effect.
