Drive Style Interactive
This consists of a recumbent exercise bike driving a DC generator, inside a cabinet styled to look like a car. The current produced is switched to different resistance circuits by a "gearshift" lever, to represent the outcomes of various drive style choices (fast accelleration, weaving between lanes on the freeway or "going with the flow").
A gauge also displays "rate of fuel use".
The output is also used to drive a scenery wheel, which is visible through the windscreen of the car and gives the appearance of travelling along a road with various humorous figures, some animated, on the roadside. For a CAD drawing click here.
The design brief: Build a robust, reliable, completely safe interactive. How did we go? The exercise bike, while being built to commercial gymnasium standards, needs frequent maintenance of loose pedals, bolts etc. However it is not difficult to do with semi-skilled personell.
