In mid 2000, we built a childrens environmental education section at the Ford Discovery Centre in Geelong. Conceptual design and development of educational content was by Vox Bandicoot, the mural was by Sharryn Madder, and we did the technical and aesthetic design and construction of all items installed.
The project was financed by Ford's Environmental Quality Office for Asia Pacific, and was officially opened on September 1 2000 by Ian Kiernan, founder of the Clean Up Australia campaign and Geoff Polites, head of Ford Australia.
The installation consists of a number of different elements. There is a classroom area, called Henry's Shed, based on the notion of the backyard tinkerer's shed from which great inventions may emerge. Then there are three major interactives which all demonstrate different choices giving various energy conservation outcomes. Last of all, there is a Have Your Say area which is essentially a desk at which the children complete written work, and a 4 lane slot car track for them to relax with when it's all over!
Special thanks Matthew Lombard, the Ford Discovery Centre's curator, whose proffessionalism and helpfulness made the job a pleasure!
