Jacob's Ladder and Hand Battery at Powerworks Visitor Centre

The Jacob's Ladder consists of two conductors with a small gap between them arranged vertically. A spark produced by a high voltage transformer rises to the top of the conductors as the hot ionised air convects upwards, until it reaches the top and pops off. Then a new spark starts again at the bottom. In the picture below the spark is near the top.

The Hand Battery consists of plates of dissimilar metals connected through a galvanometer. When a person puts a hand on each plate, the acidity of their skin generates a current which can be measured.
