Ground Orchids of Weston-Kurri Courtesy of Max Elliott H.M.R.Rupp author of "The orchids of NSW" found the bush
around these towns to have large numbers of ground orchids. He mentions
the "sandy scrubs" of Weston and Kurri - a fitting description of the
various woodland communities.
Rupp's surveys were carried out in the early 1930's. No specific locations are given, the following records are from "The Orchids of NSW", H. M. R. Rupp, National Herbarium Sydney, 1943 (reprinted 1968). Extract from " The Orchid Man", the life work of Rev. Rupp By Lionel Gilbert 1992. ……. " When we moved to Weston, Alec Chisholm, the well-known bird man and author of books like Birds and Green Places, wrote expressing his sympathy with me in being transferred from the orchid riches of Paterson to such an unpromising area as the coalfields. But I had already been skirmishing; and I replied offering to eat my hat if within twelve months I had not found more orchids on the coalfields than I had seen in nearly six years at Paterson. Being a journalist, he seized the opportunity to publish this rash offer in a Melbourne newspaper; but had it been a wager, he would have lost. For the sandy scrubs of Weston and Kurri Kurri carried such a wealth of ground orchids as I had never seen elsewhere. There were seventeen species of Greenhoods alone, including one new to science. By the end of twelve months the coalfields had beaten Paterson by two species!"
