Speech Preparation

  • The following notes are provided to help people when preparing a speech
    - Ian Schleter

    To become an accomplished speaker is no accident but requires much hard work so remember the 5 "P"s

  • Proper
  • Preparation
  • Prevents
  • Poor
  • Performance
  • Before speaking before an audience please remember the next group of "P"s.
  • Plan
  • Prepare
  • Practice
  • Perform


  • Analyse your Audience
  • Adapt your speech to suit your audience, consider such things as:
    -How large
    - Occupations
    - sex
    - age etc.
    For example a speech to Lawyers will be different from one to technical people.


    • Choose your Subject
    When selecting a subject consider the following:
    - It should be something you know and are excited about
    - It must be of interest to the audience
    - Appropriate to the occasion
    - And benefit the audience


    • Determine the purpose
    There are basically four different types of speech:
    - Inform
    - Entertain
    - Persuade
    - Inspire
    For example if we were going to talk about a game of sport then we would talk about
    - the rules (inform)
    - amusing incidents (entertain)
    - convincing people they should play (persuade)
    - a coach talking to his team (inspire)


    • Research Subject
    Consider the following points when researching your subject.
    - Determine how extensive
    - Look up books, library, magazines, encyclopedia
    - Talk to experts
    - Don't get bogged down with too much detail
    - Facts and data must be accurate and up to date
    - Consider the length of the speech


    • Organise your Speech
    Every speech should have a introduction, body and conclusion and here are some points to consider.
    - Introduction
  • Arouse attention.
  • State what speech is about.
  • Lead into body of speech.
  • - Body
  • Support ideas with facts, details, examples.
  • Illustrate with humour.
  • Keep a logical sequence and don't lose track of theme.
  • - Conclusion
  • Short, sharp and stimulating.
  • Restate main points.
  • End decisively on a positive note.
  • Point back to introduction


    • Practice
    Practice aloud on your feet
    - In front of mirror
    - With friends, family
    - With tape recorder
    - Consider variations in rate, pitch, volume

    Remember to smile and be friendly to keep the audience on your side.
