Port Stephens
Port Stephens, the Blue Water Paradise, is about three hours' drive north of Sydney on the New South Wales Coast and only a short distance from Newcastle. The crystal clear waters lap the clean, white, sandy beaches that are surrounded by scenic bushland and national parks. The Tomaree and Yacaba Heads stand like sentinels, guarding the entrance to Port Stephens, one of the most beautiful harbours in the world. Many water sports are enjoyed on its waters - sail board riding, sailing, surfing, swimming, diving, snorkeling, water skiing, motor boat riding and the ever popular fishing.
Dolphin Watching Port Stephens is known as the Dolphin Capital of Australia and there are many dolphin watch cruises that take visitors out to view the one hundred or so resident Bottlenose Dolphins. In season there are also whale watch cruises and visitors are delighted to see the Humpback whales migrating along the coast. They also sometimes see Minke and Pilot whales..The Tomaree Peninsula The major tourist areas of Port Stephens are located on the Tomaree Peninsula - these are Nelson Bay, Shoal Bay and Salamander Bay. It is just a short distance to drive across the Tomaree Peninsula from the ocean on one side, to Port Stephens on the other. The Tilligerry Peninsula The Tilligerry Peninsula is known as the Koala Capital of NSW and sometimes koalas can be seen walking on the streets. More often they are found lazing in the fork of a gum tree or feeding on their favourite leaves which are in abundance on the peninsula.
This area provides a quiet family destination away from the bustle of the more tourist destinations. The main accommodation on the peninsula can be found in Lemon Tree Passage. There is a motel adjacent to the Bowling Club and a holiday park on the shores of the Tilligerry Creek Other Attractions Surrounding Port Stephens is a many small bays and headlands. There is also an endless array of water sports and it is an ideal fishing and boating area. Other sports are bowls, golf, squash, bush walking, and tennis. Excellent food and wines are available, with winetastings at local wineries and excellent restaurants and club facilities. Williamtown offers an extensive military aircraft display and horseriding through the bush, or camel rides among the sand dunes of Stockton Beach are a favourite passtime. For the bushwalkers, a walk to the tin Huts in the sandhills of Stockton Beach are a must.
