Opening Day

The Australian Stockman's hall of fame at Longreach was opened in 1988 by the Queen, the Prime Minister and the Premier as a Bicentennial celebration project.

The small town's population swelled to more than 20,000.

Longreach Airport ........ Birth Place of QANTAS

An Army helecopter and an old gooney bird (DC3) resting near the original QANTAS hanger which was the the first aircraft factory in Australia.

During the opening of the hall of fame Longreach was one of the checkpoints for the Bicentenial air race.

The Thomson and Longreach in Flood

Although it's one of the driest areas in Australia, Longreach often suffers from flooding from rain up to 300 kilometres away. The Thomson breakes its banks and at places can be up to 10 kilometres wide.
