"The Birdsville Hotel"

This is probably the most famous outback pub in Australia.

On most days you can have a couple of quiet beers and ponder why the heck any one would live out here?

Lucky it's a quiet place otherwise you'd have to book into the opposition pub down the road.

All is Quiet! Then along rolls September.

During the first weekend in September each year the small town's population swells from 100 to 6000.

The people come from everywhere most not knowing which end of the horse is which?

The Birdsville Track

This famous road heads south from Birdsville across the border to Maree (500 kilometres away) in South Australia. It's desert country but is usually closed by flood for a number of months each year.

"The Ghan"

At the other end of the Birdsville track is the bustling metropolis of Maree. It is such a thriving centre that the train has been waiting at the station for more than twenty years waiting for a passenger.

An Artesian Bore.

This bore beside the track has water bubbling to the surface at close to boiling point.
