TRAVIS

Researching the ancestors of Lewis SYKES, who migrated to Victoria, Australia, sometime in the 1850's, took us to Margaret TRAVIS and Phillip BUCKLEY.

When seeking information on the TRAVIS line we found "Genealogical Memorials of the Travis family".

Genealogical memorials of the Travis family

"Genealogical memorials of the Travis family of Blackley, Manchester, Inchfield, Walsden, Todmorden, Heyside, High Crompton, Oldham, &co, and connections with other local families"
by John Travis, 1893

This book is a mine of information on this branch of the Travis family and their many relatives. The majority of the information relates to a single interconnected Travis family, from the late 16th to late 19th centuries. This family was centred mainly in Oldham, High Crompton, Walsden, Todmorden and surrounding areas. As well as being of interest to family historians, the book contains a good deal of information about the development of the cotton and related industries in the areas covered, with which the Travis family was intimately connected.

The book takes the form of the tales of peoples lives, loves, work and play, interspersed with tables of genealogical data. There was also a single large sheet produced in 1899 which updated the information in the book.

Kim & Claire Travis has entered all the information from the book and supplementary sheet into a genealogical database which can be found on their HomePage.

Hannah BUCKLEY (b. c1781) was the daughter of Philip BUCKLEY and Margaret TRAVIS, they too were married in the Parish Church at Oldham on 17 April 1781.  Philip and Margaret's other children were: Mary (b. c1782), George (b. c1784) and Esther (b. c1787).

We are seeking the English descendants of William and Hannah, do you have any information ?
