William SYKES married Hannah BUCKLEY in the Parish Church at Oldham, Lancashire, England, on 18 August 1806. William, a weaver, and Hannah both came from Hermitage, Lancs.. William and Hannah had 8 children: Samuel (b. c1808), Andrew (b. c 1809), Mary (b. c1811), Hannah (b. c1813), Deborah (b. c1816), Phillip (b. c1820), Lewis (b. c1822), and Elizabeth (b. c1828) all born in the Oldham/Shaw district of Lancashire.
Hannah BUCKLEY (b. c1781) was the daughter of Philip BUCKLEY and MargaretTRAVIS, they too were married in the Parish Church at Oldham on 17 April 1781. Philip and Margaret's other children were: Mary (b. c1782), George (b. c1784) and Esther (b. c1787).

Lewis SYKES migrated to Victoria, Australia, sometime in the 1850's. He married Ann McDOUGALL on 2 September 1854 at St Paul's Cathedral, Melbourne. Ann was born about 1833 on the Isle of Skye, Scotland. Her parents were Archibald McDOUGALL and Mary McDONALD. Ann arrived, with her sister Catherine McDougall, in Geelong on the Childe Harold in June 1853, having sailed from Liverpool. Ann died on 16 March 1908 at 7 Thomas Street, Geelong West. Lewis and Ann had 8 children: Hannah, William, Andrew, James, Marion, Archibald, Elizabeth Ann and Robert Lewis. Lewis SYKES died on 27 August 1907 at 41 Church Street, Geelong West.
Hannah SYKES, b. 12 May 1855, married William JENNINGS in 1878. Hannah died in May 1943. William JENNINGS parents were Jonathan JENNINGS and Pheobe DICKMAN.
William SYKES, b. 22 February 1857, married Alice HOLMES in 1881. William died on 5 December 1935.
Andrew SYKES, b. 14 May 1859, d. 1939. No other information yet uncovered.
James SYKES, b. 9 October 1864, married Alice O'LOUGHLIN in 1885.
Marion SYKES, b. 18 April 1864, married James VICCARS in 1884. Marion died on 13 April 1900.
Archibald SYKES, b. 24 September 1866, married Christina LEVERETT in 1891.
Elizabeth Ann SYKES, b.11 September 1869, married Joseph LORIMER on 7 September 1892. "Lizzie" died on 8 September 1956.
Robert Lewis SYKES, b. 30 April 1873, married Ellen Jane COBB in 1907.

notes: Looking for the origins of Ann McDougall, who was born about 1833 on the Isle of Skye, SCT. There is much confusion about Ann's mother's name. On her certificate of marriage to Lewis Sykes, she states that her mother was Mary McDonald and her father Archibald McDougall. Her death certificate records her mother as Marion Stewart. We have just searched the Scottish pre-1855 Index for the birth of Ann McDougall unsuccessful, as were searches for the marriage of a couple with the names she gave as her parents. Her death certificate records her mother as Marion Stewart. Other research has found an Ann McDougal was baptised in the Parish of Kilmuit by Uig, Isle if Skye, on 6th August 1833. In this record her parents are given as Archibald McDougal and Marion McQuian - this looks like a version of McEwen. Who were Ann McDougall's ancestors ? |
