A new language for SPC (stored-program control) is currently being tested in the development laboratories of General Motors in the USA. This new machine control language uses flowcharts to describe the sequence of logic functions. A similar language has been developed by fischertechnik for use with it’s computer interface units and model construction system. This system has been used by universities and companies for the simulation and testing of control systems and their related software.

The fischertechnik software, called LLWIN, provides a flowchart style of programming language, which is ideal for ‘real-time’ machine control. Version 3 runs under Windows 95+ or NT/2000/XP and provides a graphical depiction of the flowchart including; decision blocks for switch inputs, action blocks to control each output and other blocks to increment and test up to 99 integer variables (V1-V99) and 16 count variables (Z1-Z16). Other features include; a terminal block to aid testing and debugging, time delay blocks, one-shot blocks, subprogram blocks and improved aids such as; automatic routing and the ability to add comments and graphics to the program page.

LLWIN provides real-time control under Windows. This means that LLWIN programs continue to run uninterrupted in 'real-time' whilst you run over applications.

The new fischertechnik interface unit provides eight digital inputs, two analog inputs and four bi-directional motor outputs (or eight lamp outputs). All inputs and outputs use safe low-voltage devices (9 Volts DC). The two analog inputs may be used with potentiometers (for position control), light dependent resistors (for measuring light), thermisters (for measuring temperature) or any resistive device between 0 and 5000 ohms. The number of I/O may be expanded to 16 digital inputs and 8 motor outputs in total using the 16554 slave module.

The software also works with the old interface unit (30520) which pluged into the parallel port. The new ‘intelligent’ unit (30402) connects to the serial port (COM 1 to 4) and allows either ‘passive’ control where the computer reads the inputs and performs various operations on the outputs and ‘active’ control where the program is ‘downloaded’ to the interface and then operates independently of the computer allowing the serial cable to be disconnected.

Three versions of LLWIN are available from Procon Technology. Version 2.04E controls only the 30520 interface whereas version 2.10E controls both interfaces, comes on CD-ROM with additional instructional information. The minimum computer requirements are 486/66 DX2, 8MB RAM. The 32 bit version 3 requires a Pentium 100MHz processor, 32MB RAM running Windows 95+ or NT. A site license of version 3 now provides unlimited copies on one site (p/n 37321).

STOP PRESS: A 32 bit version of LLWIN for Windows 95+ and Windows 2000, XP and NT is available now! To download a trial (working) copy of version 3.0 click here. A FREE upgrade from version 3 to 3.03 is now available click here
