Dear customer, please note that unavoidable price rises have occurred on some products due to the poor Aussie Dollar. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.

WARNING: Some low cost Cathode Ray Oscilloscopes (CRO) have become available in Australia. We cannot recommend any of these cheap CROs because of their poor design innovation, construction quality and long-term reliability. To compare, simply check the manual (poor English), look for warning notices (they should have the maximum input voltages indicated on the front panel) and open them up (poor quality and ICs in sockets). More - click here. We are so confident of the quality of the CROs we offer that we have extended the warranty to 2 years. Schools, TAFE colleges and Universities please take note!

QC1908 (shown above)
The Protek (also sold under the HUNG CHANG brandname) 6502A model (6502 with ALT triggering) is a 20MHz, dual channel, four trace Cathode Ray Oscilloscope (CRO). This is a practical instrument with well thought out features including a big 6" screen for easy reading, zero parallax graticule to eliminate reading errors, TV sync separator for stable display of TV video signals and high sensitivity input amplifiers for measuring down to 1mV/div. The heavy-duty rear feet double as a power cable tidy and the versatile carry handle folds down to form a sturdy stand. The CRO is housed in a pressed steel cabinet and the control panel is clearly marked and functionally laid out. Up to 4 traces can be simultaneously displayed using the ALT-MAG and DUAL functions while advanced trig circuits ensure stable triggering even with two unrelated signals (ALT). From the large clear 6" screen to the comprehensive and well laid out controls, this CRO is as good as it looks! Comes with two quality 10:1/1:1 probes, instruction manual, spare fuses and a 2 year warranty. Highly recommended for service workbenches, design laboratories, manufacturers, schools and universities and the dedicated enthusiast. Operates on 90-130VAC or 200-250VAC 50-60Hz power through IEC socket. Also comes with CD-ROM with service and calibration manual, circuit diagrams and other useful information! i.e. How to use an oscilloscope (ideal handout for schools).

Comparing CROs: If comparing the QC1908 oscilloscope with other low cost units please check the following specs; AC bandwidth (some have less on AC than DC), channel isolation, external trigger voltage maximum, AC input voltage (some have 220VAC with 250VAC maximum) and make sure it can be left on indefinitely (e.g. one had a 'Continuous Working Time' of only 8 hours). Note that the Protek 6502A provides a steady trace (i.e. alternate triggering) of both channel 1 and 2* AND provides 4 traces with two showing expanded views (x5). Check the manual - can you understand it? If you can open up the CRO and see if the ICs are in sockets (It's OK if the input amplifiers are in sockets because they could be blown up by the user). If you are carrying around the CRO any bump or knock could cause ICs to pop out of their sockets - beware! Does it have a channel 1 out? This is useful for connecting a frequency counter or other equipment. Finally, do they provide circuit diagrams, service and calibration manuals and a two year warranty?

*This 'ALT' triggering feature is very useful in servicing equipment where we often compare the signal from a known good piece of equipment with a faulty unit. Without this feature, one signal would 'wander' on the display (due to slight differences in frequency) making it difficult to compare!

Warning when measuring 240VAC or 415VAC: Oscilloscope manufacturers recommend extreme caution when measuring dangerous voltages. Such voltages should never be connected directly to any measuring instrument without taking appropriate precautions. It is recommended that a high voltage 100:1 probe such as the QC-1903 be used (1000:1 probes are also available) and that the neutral always be connected to ground or earth potential and that the earth connection on the CRO should NEVER be disconnected. i.e. be careful never to leave high voltages connected and removing the power plug (on portable devices never open the battery compartment). Always connect the earth terminal on the CRO as an additional protective measure and always use an earth leakage detector (Residual Current Device - RCD) when working around mains voltages!
