The ADC-808 board (240mm x 100mm) has been designed for applications where reliable operation in the most arduous conditions is required. These boards are mounted externally and are capable of operating through any IBM-PC bi-directional parallel Printer Adapter interface (many PCs, notebooks and industrial PC/104 computers have compatible interfaces). The use of the PC-BD-IO interface card is recommended for guaranteed operation and full expansion capability. Four DIP switches select each board’s address setting on the PA-BUS allowing up to fifteen cards to be daisy-chained using a single 25 way cable and provides up to 120 analogue inputs. Or using other boards available in the range, combinations of analogue and digital inputs and relay outputs can provide up to 240 I/O. These boards are also capable of being controlled by a suitable microcomputer system such as the ABC (AVR Basic Controller). The ABC also allows you to control the boards through the serial port!

The PA-BUS interface to the computer uses the latest ALS logic devices for low power consumption, improved drive capability (PA-BUS cable lengths to 30 metres are possible) and increased protection against electrostatic discharge which conforms to the MIL-M-38510 spec. The PA-BUS interface also allows the board to be powered up and down whilst the bus is operating.

The on-board 8 bit analogue to digital converter (ADC) has a total error of +/- 1 bit and a maximum sampling rate of 50,000 samples per second (25,000 samples guaranteed over the full temperature range). Each analogue input has user configurable circuitry although the board may be purchased with 0-10 Volt or 0-20 mA inputs as standard. Other options include; temperature inputs (using low-cost semiconductor devices) capable of measuring 2 to 100°C with a resolution of 0.5°C. Or higher resolution of 0.25°C over 0 to 60°C.

Each board provides status or ID information to the computer, allowing the system configuration to be determined and checked. Fail-safe functioning has been designed into the board with a watch-dog timer providing shutdown if a computer read or write operation has not been performed within 0.15 or 1.5 seconds (jumper selectable). This function may be turned off it not required. Power fail indication is also provided allowing the computer to take necessary corrective action if a power loss occurs on any board connected to the system.

An special version, ADC808/S, is available with 500 Volt isolation between each analogue input , detachable screw terminals for easy installation and extended supply voltage range. Other options are available to customer order.

Other boards in the range are; G6C-24VAC a 8 relay output and 8 input board and the PC-IO-G6C2 sixteen relay output board.

A range of programming options are available. The advanced ADC software provides numerous programs to help get your application up-and-running fast! High speed routines are provided that allow control of a system with 120 analogue inputs from most languages. Example programs are provided for: QBASIC, VisualBASIC for Windows, C, Pascal. Example programs in Delphi and VisualC++ are also available. The control software has now been tested with Windows NT, 2000 and XP.

Should you wish to program the board directly, the following program illustrates how easy it is. This program is written in QBASIC and assumes that a PA-BUS card is installed at the port address of 768 (300 hex) and that the ADC board is set to address 1 (both default values). The one analogue input from channel 0 is read and stored in variable A0.

Using the subroutines provided on the ADC software diskette, complex logic control routines can be programmed and combined with data acquisition functions. An example of analogue input, in BASIC, follows:

A value between 0 and 255 is returned from ADC board Address (1 to 15) and Channel (0 to 7).
