Chapter 3

"I've decided to expand my business, and I'm inviting you two to help me with the extensions. Once the building part is done, there'll be permanent jobs waiting for you, if you're interested. It'll be interesting work, and the pay will be more than enough to keep you happy.  What do you think?"

Tassie and Dingo looked at each other. They looked at ozEkoala. They stared at the ground for a minute.  Then Dingo spoke first.

"Gee, thanks ozE. No-one's ever offered us a job before.. But do you think we could stand it?  You seem to work a lot - would we have to work as hard as you?  I've always wanted to get rich quick and never have to work again, but the way you live, you'll be working for the rest of your life... I dunno if I could stand it...."

"When you enjoy your work Dingo, it doesn't matter if you do it all your life.  You need to find something that you love and stick at it.  You always go for money, but what about what you're good at?  I've seen the way you love my wooden plaques - I think you'd be really good at burning the words onto them - and you can draw so well! I can think of so many other things we could do with the business if we work together."

Tassie was listening, but his mind was drifting.  He felt sick and had to get away.  This was nauseating!   Regular work?  He could think of nothing worse!  How was he going to get away as quickly as possible?

Suddenly Tassie jumped up.   "OzE! Sorry girl, I've gotta go! I nearly forgot, I promised to give Magpie this ribbon for her collection!  I better go!  Thanks for the tucker - seeya Dingo!"  And in 10 seconds flat, he was gone.

Dingo was left with his mouth hanging open, a characteristic grin on his face.

"You sure scared Tassie off, ozE!
I don't think we'll be seeing him around here for a while!"

OzEkoala and Dingo spent the next half hour discussing the future, and Dingo's hopes began to rise that maybe he could get used to the idea of having a regular income for the first time in his life.

Then ozEkoala pulled out the ancient manuscript they had discovered the previous week, and they went over the first few chapters together.  Dingo wasn't used to thinking too hard, but he just knew he felt good when ozEkoala was reading it, and it seemed to make sense when she explained what she thought it meant.
