Man In The Hat - CAT
NO. GARE 001
Biography
Gary's career has had more ups and downs than the rodeo circuit he
followed all over Australia. His first on-stage appearance was at the tender age of eight
when he sang the Cole Porter standard "Don't Fence Me In" to a packed Melbourne
Town Hall audience. The far reaching title of that familiar, old song fairly much
epitomizes Gary's musical pursuits. As well, he was an outstanding boxing prospect before
swapping his golves for the guitar.
At nineteen he polled 10,000 votes in winning the prestigious Australia's Amateur Hour and his career really took off. After travelling around Australia with Ern Smith's "Western Revue", Gary returned as a polished performer, he then accepted a recording contract and undertook a weekly TV program. Gary Ellis has appeared on every radio station around Australia, has toured on the Tivoli Theatre circuit and was selected to entertain allied troops at the front. He also shared billing with the legendary Johnnie Ray on television. Along the way, Gary has worked as a racehorse trainer, showman, racing journalist, trackman and raconteur. These pursuits have made him well known in Sri Lanka and East Asia.
Gary's career was thought to be over at the age of twenty eight when he bacame an alcoholic, suffering all the associated pain, mentally as well as physically. Many of his friends and buddies deserted him altogether and he stopped singing completely. After years of living in a haze, Gary went with a good friend to meet some people who'd suffered the same illness but who'd since recovered. Miraculously, Gary conquered his problems and hasn't touched alcohol for years since. A chance re-acquaintance with Desmond Kelly, a talented entertainer himself, gave Gary the heart to give country music another go. as a result, Gary Ellis became a contributor to the highly acclaimed Ishala CD album that became so successful, both in Australia and abroad.
The latest link in Gary's musical career is his newly released "Man In The Hat" CD album. Comprising such under used standards as "Cottage In The Country", "Soldier's Last Letter" and "Leave Him in the Longyard", along side newer works, "The Names Of Our Heroes", "Your World is What You Make It", "Our Anniversary" and "Sri Lanka's Hereos", the album is gaining stacks of air play around Australia. Whatever happens in the future, this is a remarkable comeback for a great bloke.
