Mark Atkins Plays Didgeridoo ENC-134
Biography
This may be one of the most important
in establishing Australia's cultural identity. Mark Atkins is a member of the
Yamatji
people of Western Australia and moved to the Eastern States to get away from the rigidity
imposed by his tribal customs. In doing so, he has crafted an album of highly traditional
music. This is authentic traditional music with the use of western
instruments to achieve tone colourings which a didgeridoo might not be able to
impart to listeners alone. This album comes highly recommended to anyone who wants to hear
a 'new
music' which just happens to be
40,000 years old.
Atkins is true to the traditional form of Aboriginal music which is every song tells a
story. The stories are fascinating enough but the word painting achieved by the different
tones coaxed from the didgeridoo are purely brilliant. The themes of nature and the animal
kingdom frolicking and fighting, as seen through aboriginal eyes, brings a sense of
Australia which is rarely seen captured on disc. Don't miss out on this experience.
