In the 1880s the Soudan [Sudan] was nominally subject to Egypt which was under British occupation. In 1881 the Sudanese rose in rebellion and in 1884 the British sent General Charles Gordon as Governor General to the Sudanese city of Khartoum to restore order. Shortly after his arrival the city was besieged by the rebels who captured it in January 1885. Gordon was killed in the defense of the city and his death horrified much of Britain and its empire. Public opinion forced the British Government to send in troops to put down the rebellion and restore order.
The New South Wales Parliament offered Britain 2 batteries of artillery and an infantry battalion of 500 men to serve in the Soudan. Britain accepted this offer but took only one battery of artillery.
He would also have received the following unofficial medals upon his return :- Mayor of Sydney's Silver Medal, City of Singleton's Medal, City of Newcastle's Medal and a Special Silver Medal.

Goulburn Herald, Mon. Jan. 31, 1898
Military Court
At the torchlight procession in Goulburn on Hospital Saturday (in November) a dispute arose between Lieutenant Newman, commanding G Company of the partially-paid force, and Captain Barrett, of Goulburn company of Australian Rifles, as to which should have precedence. Reported to headquarters, both were suspended. An inquiry is now being held by a court comprising of Colonel Holborow C.M.G of the 3rd Regiment and Lieutenant-Colonel Bayley of the 1st Regiment and Campbell of the Scottish Rifles. The inquiry commenced at four o'clock on Friday with closed doors. Other officers on duty are Captain Legge, adjutant 2nd Regiment; Lieutenant Grieve, adjutant of the Scottish and Australian Rifles; Lieutenant Thompson, adjutant of the Australian Horse; and Lieutenant Wall of the 2nd Regiment. The court sat till late on Friday night, resumed on Saturday morning, and was continued till 9 p.m., when it was adjourned till 8:30 this morning.
The evidence was concluded at lunch-time; after which Lieutenant Newman and Captain Barrett commenced their addresses. It is expected that the inquiry will conclude this evening. The court will report to the General and he will give a decision.
Goulburn Herald, Wed. Feb.2, 1898
Military Court of Inquiry
The inquiry into the dispute between Captain Barrett and Lieutenant Newman concluded at seven o'clock on Monday evening, and the members of the court and other officers in attendance left for Sydney by mail train.
Goulburn Herald, Fri. Feb. 18, 1898
Military.
We hear that Lieutenant Newman received a wire yesterday stating that his suspension ceased from that date.
Goulburn Herald, Mon. Feb. 21, 1898
Military
The brief notification in Friday's issue that Lieutenant Newman, commanding G company, 2nd Regiment, had received a wire on Thursday intimating that his suspension had been removed was officially verified on Saturday. It is also officially stated that the commission of Captain Barrett of the Australian Rifles has been cancelled. It may be remembered that about three weeks ago a court of inquiry was held in Goulburn by three Colonels into a charge brought by Lieutenant Newman against Captain Barrett for using insulting language and assaulting him at the torchlight procession held during Hospital Saturday, December 4, when a dispute arose as to which officer was entitled to precedence. Captain Barrett admitted that heated words had passed, but denied the assault.
His name is inscribed on one of the sandstone gates for Belmore Park, Goulburn and on a plaque on a timber bridge over the Mulwaree River.
