Obituary - Mr. J. J. Richardson
The death occurred at his residence, Illawarra Road, Marrickville, at the age of 86, of Mr. Joseph John Richardson, who for the greater part of his life was a resident of Goulburn and took a great interest in its progress. He left Goulburn 11 years ago.
Born at South Lambert, Surrey, England, on December 11, 1845, Mr. Richardson came to this country in 1855 with his parents, and for some time they lived in Sydney in a house surrounded by a garden, which was later the site of the first emporium of Anthony Horderns at the Haymarket and which was afterwards destroyed by fire. They lived in Liverpool for some time, and in 1857, having decided to make their home on Goulburn, did the journey in a week in a covered waggon.
Mr. Richardson's father entered upon business as a builder in Goulburn, and took in his son to assist him. Among the public buildings they erected were the Goulburn Technical School and Liverpool, Marulan and Goulburn railway stations: and they also worked on the bridge which spans the river at Goulburn.
In 1868 Mr. Richardson married the second daughter of Mr. Richard Barker, manager of Marsden's Estate on the Bland; Mrs. Richardson died in 1927. Five children, 14 grand-children, and eight great grand-children survive.
During his lengthy residence in Goulburn, Mr. Richardson was an alderman for 25 years, and twice filled the Mayoral chair - in 1896-1897. He joined the Manchester Unity of Oddfellows in 1866, and after filling various offices, including that of
financial secretary, was ultimately elected a Past Deputy Grand Master. He also served for 18 weeks as a trustee of the order. For many years he was a member of the Protestant Alliance Friendly Society, and filled several offices. He was a member of the Mechanics' Institute Committee and, for some time, was licensee of the Emu Inn, which was on the western side of Auburn Street in the block bounded by Bradley and Goldsmith Streets.
The funeral took place yesterday, when the interment was made in the Church of England portion of the Woronora cemetery.
