Personal Interests

Amateur Radio - VK3OHM
Although I obtained my license in 1984, I'm actually new to Amateur Radio, finally getting on air in Feb-2012. I obtained my license in G-land, and after returning home had a VK1 call. I never actually got around to buying equipment, but rectified that in 2012.

I'm using an Icom IC-7000 transceiver into a Diamond W-8010 multi-band (80m, 40m, 20m, 15m, 10m) dipole at 100W. It is strung from some extended tennis court light poles, so there is all sorts of extraneous wire mesh too close for comfort. The antenna is only 8m high and oriented directly North/South, so if you can hear me, you are probably East or West of me. I also have a Diamond X5000 for local communication on 2m/70cm, and a Diamond F61 for 6m.

The QTH is about 30km east of Melbourne in an area of 1 acre blocks, and plenty of tall trees. Perhaps I'll be able to exploit these one day for a much higher antenna, but for the moment the Diamond seems to get out OK.

Weather

I have one of those generic weather stations (a la Jaycar) and have interfaced it to the 'net. I use Cumulus to collect the data, and publish it below using Weather UnderGround

Genealogy

Legacy

I have been searching my family history for many years with some success since 1984. A full HTML version of my family tree and that of my wife is available. This shows full family group sheets for all individuals and what details I have. Hopefully some of you people out there can recognise some of the individuals. I'm also looking for information on William Hillman of the Hillman Motor Company.

I use Legacy to keep my records. I can highly recommend this package.

During my researches I have purchased a wonderful book entitled Notorious Strumpets & Dangerous Girls by Phillip Tardif. It contains biographical details of 1,675 women transported to Van Diemens Land (Tasmania) between 1803 and 1829. I'm happy to look up and pass on details to researchers interested in any entries in this book.

I'm an avowed Skeptic. The Australian Skeptics Inc is a very interesting site. So all you spam'ers and junk mailers out there, don't waste bandwidth with your silly offers.
