Thursday 23 June, 2005,

The walk in June will be to Botany Bay National Park at Kurnell where, if we are lucky, we should see migrating whales from the purpose-built viewing platform at Cape Solander.

On we assemble at Epping Station for the 8:56am train to Redfern, where we change for Cronulla and then by bus to Kurnell.

Kurnell is a very historic area, being the landing point of Lieutenant James Cook in 1770, and thus the birthplace of European settlement in Australia. We will see the Cooks Landing Rock, the Landing Monument and the site of the Historic Well dug by Cook’s men for fresh water.

After morning tea we will proceed to the Discovery Centre which has a wonderful display of items of interest relevant to the discovery and settlement of the area. We then walk via the Yena track and boardwalk to Cape Solander where we will have lunch and hopefully see some whales.

After lunch we return via the Muru track and Yena picnic area to the bus stop for the return journey to Epping.
