OUTINGS
June
Our June outing on Monday 20th will be a train trip to Newcastle with lunch at the Stockton RSL Club. Meet at Epping Station to catch the 8:38am train to Newcastle. The train arrives in Newcastle at 10:52am, which will allow a leisurely walk through the heritage areas of Newcastle East to the Queens Wharf, to catch the 11:45am ferry to Stockton.
Newcastle East is the birthplace of the city and the Hunter Region, and began in 1804 as a penal settlement where Sydney’s worst convicts were sent. Since that time it has been extensively utilised for industry, transport, shipping and intensive housing. Our walk to the Queens Wharf, whilst only a short distance, will take us past the old Customs House, the Convict Lumber Yard, the residential and warehouse precinct, the former rail marshalling yards and the Watt Street Wharf. The revitalisation of the city is quite apparent.
From Queens Wharf we take the Stockton Ferry, which connects with a local bus for a short journey to the RSL Club for lunch.
After lunch there will be time for the more energetic members to be able to return to the wharf by walking along Stockton Beach and the Shipwreck Trail. A local bus will be available as an alternate for those not wishing to walk.
We return to Newcastle by ferry and will have an opportunity to walk along Hunter Street through Newcastle’s CBD with its historic buildings and modern shopping areas, to the Station to catch the 2:38pm train to Epping, arriving home at 4:54pm.
Cost of the day is $17 per person, plus $2.50 for the train & ferry.
