OUTINGS
August
Our August outing on Monday 15th will be a visit to the Bus & Truck Museum at Tempe, followed by lunch at a nearby German club, the Concordia Club. Travel will be by train. Meet at Epping Station to catch the 8:56am train to Redfern where we change for the Tempe line.
The Bus & Truck Museum is a world class vehicle museum committed to the long term preservation and presentation of historic transport exhibits. It houses 80-90 vehicles, most of them on display and mostly in running order. The oldest bus is a 1922 Ford and there are two trucks dating back to 1914. There are representative vehicles right up until the mid 70’s, and feature a number of Green & Cream Sydney Double Decks, and two Red London Double Deckers. We will be able to have a ride on one of the double deckers. There are a number of historic photographs and other memorabilia which will also be of interest to our ladies.
The site of the museum is also interesting. It is the former Tempe Tram Depot, built in 1922 to house the ‘Green-Line’ trams, which Sydney based Probus members will remember operated from Railway & The Quay to Cooks River, Earlwood, Dulwich Hill and Canterbury. It was converted to a bus depot in 1954. The remaining trams went to Newtown Depot until the trams ceased completely in 1957.
A highlight of the day will be a bistro lunch at the Concordia German Club at Tempe. We will have a choice of a range of typical German foods including German sausage, kassler, leberkase and veal schnitzel. All meals are served with fried potato (bratkartoffel) and white or red cabbage (sauerkraut or rotkohl). For those who are interested, there will also be a range of German beers available for sampling (at own cost), with Dortmunder on tap and a variety of bottled beers.
After lunch we return to Epping by train. Cost of the day is $18.00, covering museum entry, morning tea and lunch, plus $2.50 for the train fare.
