November
The outing on the 21st November will be a morning visit to Australia’s largest and most important archaeological museum, the Nicholson Museum at Sydney University, followed by lunch and a guided tour at the Powerhouse Museum in the afternoon.
The Nicholson Museum on the campus of Sydney University, was established by the Chancellor Sir Charles Nicholson in 1860 as the first Australian archaeological museum. It began with a generous donation by Sir Charles of his large and valuable collection of Etruscan, Greek, Roman, and Egyptian antiquities. In the 145 years since, the museum has continued to acquire archaeological specimens, specialising in antiquities from the Eastern Mediterranean. For our visit an archaeologist will guide us around the collection.
Lunch will be at the Powerhouse Museum Café.
Members will no doubt recall the interesting address we had in July from Peter Sage on the ‘History of the NSW Railways’, in which he referred to the collection of rolling stock and other NSWGR memorabilia held at the Powerhouse Museum. After lunch the Curator of Trains at the Museum will give us a tour and talk to us about the collection, including Locomotive No 1 in its 150th birthday year. This will be followed by a guided tour of the rest of the Museum including the recently restored Strasburg Clock.
Travel will be by train and bus. Assemble at Epping Station at 8:30am to catch the 8:38am train to the city, where we transfer to a bus for the University. Return to the Powerhouse will also be by bus.
Cost for the day is $15 (plus fares)
