Monday 16th March 2009
Our outing this month will be a coach trip on 16th March to the Tomago and Williamtown. After an early start we will have morning tea and an inspection of Tomago House at Tomago. Then we move on to the RAAF Base at Williamtown to Fighterworld before returning to Tomago Bowling Club for lunch.
Tomago House is a National Trust property, built in the 1840’s by the Windeyer family (a family prominent in legal circles in NSW then and still), and occupied by the family for three generations. The house is a sandstone villa and was the centrepiece of a large estate with its own family chapel and surrounded by pleasure gardens. Whilst the house is only partly furnished, we will have access to the attics, the cellars and the chapel, and there is an interesting display in the history room.
Fighterworld is on the RAAF Base at Williamtown and our visit will include a 45 minute guided tour of the military base followed by a self guided tour of the museum. The museum features fighter aircraft and engines, aircraft models and weapons. There is a photographic display, an audio visual presentation, an observation deck to watch FA-18 Hornets and BAE Hawk take off and land, and access to a jet aircraft cockpit. Because the tour is on a military establishment we will all need to provide ID (licence number or Medicare number) before access to the site.
The coach will depart as usual from the West Epping Panthers Bowling Club. Assemble at 7:30am for a 7:45am departure. We expect to return to Epping around 4:00pm.
Cost for the day is $40 per person.
