Monday 16th June 2008
Our June outing on 16th will be a guided tour of two NSW National Parks attractions at La Perouse, the La Perouse Museum and the Bare Island Fort.
The La Perouse Museum tells the story of the ill-fated French explorer Comte de Laperouse who landed at Botany Bay in 1788, just six days after Captain Phillip and the First Fleet. Learn of their encounter with the British and the local Aboriginal people. A number of maps, early navigation instruments and relics from various shipwrecks are on display.
In 1885 concerned colonists in New South Wales feared invasion from the Russians was imminent. Bare Island Fort was built to protect Sydney’s back door – Botany Bay – thus easing the minds of our early settlers. Enter a world of military pride, shocking scandals and hidden secrets. (You may also recognise Bare Island as the location for some thrilling action sequences in the well known movie ‘Mission Impossible II’)
At the conclusion of the museum visits we will take a short walk to Dannys Seafood Restaurant on the waterfront at La Perouse.
Travel will be by train and bus. Meet at Epping Station at 8:30am to catch the 8:38am train to the City.
Cost for the day is $25.00.
