Scrumbling Freeform
SCRUMBLING

or

Taking Your Yarn for a Walk
© Jenny Dowde 1995

Choose a colourway, pick up a crochet hook, chain a few stitches and you are off on the adventure of a lifetime. One of the things I like most about scrumbling, is the total design freedom it allows. There are no patterns, virtually no rules, mistakes become design elements, and best of all, no swatching! In fact you can mix as many crochet and/or knit stitches and yarn varieties as your heart desires without fear of failure. Apart from a never-ending supply of materials, what more does a textile artist want?

I love 'scrumbling' so much that I decided to write a book about it and other freeform approaches!

Watch for my second book, due to be released in July 2006!

"The main objective behind this book is to introduce readers to the wonderful world of "Taking Your Yarn For a Walk" through the mediums of colour, texture and freeform crochet and knitting.

For those who like a challenge, once the techniques are learned the concept of 'scrumbling' i.e. working in a freeform manner, is easy to adapt to larger projects and to the creation of wearable art"!

Why did I give these two bags this particular title? It's a longish story and the short version is that I made them for a friend to take to the recent Stitches West event. Instead, after almost two weeks of worrying that they wouldn't reach her in time, they arrived back here in Australia. Yes, that's right! Returned To Sender!! Hopefully they'll get to go to Stitches Mid West in August!
