What is  Feng Shui?

Feng Shui is based on certain laws of nature and a logical technology; and like medicine or architecture its application is an art.

Feng Shui literally means 'wind & water'; - a poetic reference for the dynamic distribution of active and quiet areas in a living space.

As a system of building design it originated in China and is based on thousands of years of research. The practice of Feng Shui utilises scientific formulas and calculations and requires rigorous study and professional training in order to produce consistent results.

Feng Shui integrates the effect of invisible energies with the placement and design of physical features of a building. (Such as doors, walls, gardens and water.) Unfortunately the term "energy" is fairly vague. One definition that is useful in Feng Shui is: 'the ability to produce an action or effect'. As we walk into a building we can often feel its energy; we might experience its radiance or it may feel heavy. Such effects are similar to the effects of a person with good or bad energy on us.

A Feng Shui analysis can explain how an existing building affects us, but that is not its main purpose. The main purpose is being able to deliberately design, buildings that are radiant and conducive to living, although a building can be fixed up to some extent later as well.

There are buildings that have vibrant energy, others are dull; and there are areas in a building with beautiful soft energy conducive to health and sleep, and others areas may cause people to get sick. The purpose of a Feng Shui analysis is to determine where these various energies are in an existing building or where they will be in a new building. Then a Feng Shui consultant can help an architect of designer or occupant take advantage of the best energies and to minimise the effects of the negative ones.

Through the proper placement of entrances, rooms, pathways, water and furniture, and through colour and décor that agree with the prevailing energy type, Feng Shui design produces the best possible effects of a building on its occupants. Each particular activity and person is supported. Life becomes easier with such support and people tend to be happier and more effective in life.
