Important information for
Architects & Designers:

How You Can Make Sure, Without Fail, That a Building Will Feel Alive and Support the Activities of Its Occupants

As an architect or designer you can greatly enhance the value of your business and service by working together with a Feng Shui consultant. The technology of Feng Shui can bring a deeper understanding of the invisible Feng Shui energies of a building to your expertise in design. These energies, together with the more obvious design features, have a great influence on the 'good feel' of a place.

The invisible laws of nature, which are manifested in the harmony of music or the symmetry of plants, have been observed, formulated and applied to building design by traditional Feng Shui masters. Utilising these ancient formulas, a Soulspace consultant develops an Overall Space Utilization Map (OSUM) for a building. This map describes the various qualities of energy in the different sections of each individual home or office. It shows where within the floor-plan the various activities should or should not be located. It also gives information, which colour schemes are most favourable in each area. This information should be considered before you design a building or plan a renovation.

Using the OSUM, which tells you what type of activity various areas are suitable for, you can maximise the radiance and good feeling in a building. For example a certain area may be ideal for mental activity, it would therefore make a good office or study, but if used as a bedroom it might cause poor health and insomnia. Or a certain area might be ideal for communication and make a great living or meeting area, but this quality would be wasted if it was made into a storage space.

With this valuable information laid out simply and clearly in an OSUM, an architect or design professional can then use any style or design to fulfil their clients' needs. With an OSUM in hand, there is the certainty that a space is being used to its best advantage. The feeling in the space will be noticeably positive. Without an OSUM much is left to chance and the most expensive furnishing and perfect colour scheme could fall flat.

The Ignorant West
In the West there is a fundamental misunderstanding as to what Feng Shui actually is. Feng Shui does not mean wind chimes and mirrors, but is the scientific study and artful application of certain laws of nature to living spaces. The popular information books about Feng Shui in the West have simplified this intricate technique enormously, are full of untruths and trivia and are often devoid of real Feng Shui. As a result sensible home and business people in the West have discarded Feng Shui as a useful tool. It has become a topic of conversation at parties and the subject of beautiful picture books that sit on coffee tables but have little practical value.

The Benefits of Feng Shui in Design
Everyone can instantly recognize the difference between walking into a space that feels radiant and alive, compared to one that feels heavy and dull. Such difference is not accidental. With an understanding the natural laws of Feng Shui a space that feels positive can be created with certainty every time. When working on a business office, a family home or a landscape this information is invaluable.  In the extreme an error in this can actually affect a persons health and happiness.

Feng Shui can determine how to locate & maximise the energies that bring radiance into a building. These positive energies are instantly sensed and are conducive to activity and business. Energies supporting communication, study, good health and relaxation can also be enhanced.

Feng Shui also establishes the location of harmful energies that create dullness and can lead to problems in business, relations, health and communication. With the help of Feng Shui such harmful areas can be avoided by relegating them to storage areas.

With a Feng Shui OSUM, a designer can apply his or her craft to a layout that makes use of good energies and avoids harmful influences. With the knowledge of Feng Shui a space that is 'alive' and 'works' can be created.  Some designers try to bring "life" into a building or a space with colour.  If the colour they use happens to be the correct colour for the Feng Shui situation then the room will look alive, but if it happens to clash with the proper Feng Shui colour then the room will still look dead.

Soulspace Feng Shui
At Soulspace, we help design solutions that can easily be incorporated into a design strategy and applied to the clients' requirements and style. It is best to start at the blueprint stage of design but many things can be done to enhance an existing living space. Many of these are inexpensive and simple to implement.

Feng Shui is essential when designing a living space because it guarantees that it will feel alive and support the activities of its occupants. Feng Shui, applied in the design stage of a building with an Architect & Designer, ensures that it will feel alive and support the activities of its occupants. Without it, much is left to chance.
