Synopsis
In
a highly competitive environment, South Korean children regularly
spend long
hours
in special classes to learn English, on top of their normal workload.
But even that is not enough. Many Korean families send their children
overseas
to
study, splitting up families in the name of education.
Simkin spoke to one Korean man who hadn’t seen his wife and children
for seven
years
– they were overseas so that the children could learn English.
“I’ll be a bit lonesome, and will need to adjust. But since this
is necessary for the
sake
of our family, for the sake of our kids, I think I’ll be able to
endure it,” one
father
told Simkin.
But there are even more drastic measures being taken. Simkin uncovers
an emerging
trend
that even has South Korean authorities worried – tongue operations.
Many parents are convinced their children won’t be able to learn
English properly
because
their tongues are shaped the wrong way. This has led to a growing
business
among
some doctors to operate on children to modify their tongues.
“It’s pure and simple ignorance” one psychologist tells Simkin.
“ A lot of Korean kids
and
Japanese kids born and growing up in the
United States
have no problem with
English
pronunciation – it has nothing to do with the tongue.”
Nevertheless the practice continues, leading the Korean Government to
release a
video
warning parents of the dangers in the practice.
It’s all part of a national obsession in
Korea
– to ensure a strong future for the
country
through education.
