I am researching a group of families all of which had members that were in
either India and/or Burma and Australia.
On the Bateman side, my father, Richard Allan Bateman was born in Burma. He
married Muriel Meaton.
Richard's father, Henry Herbert Bateman, was born in London, UK, November
12, 1870, married there and three daughters; traveled to Burma (worked for
Merryweathers and took a fire engine to Rangoon) where he married
Regina Beryl Green(e). He died in Burma.
Henry Herbert's father, Henry Wright Bateman, was born in London, UK,
August 10, 1847, and died in Sidney, Australia, September 11, 1926. Henry
Wright had a brother Norman.
Regina Regina Beryl Green(e) was born in Burma, March 13, 1890 and died in
India or Burma in 1940. Her parents were Sophie Florence Ellis, born in
Burma, November 19, 1866 and Theodore Adolphus Greene, married to Sophie
Ellis in 1885. Sophie Ellis had an aunt Regina Ros/zario(s).
On my mother's side I am researching a Fairman family that traveled from
India to Australia. It is possible that the Meaton family also traveled
from India to Australia.
My grandmother, Mercy Fairman, married Robert Meaton, son of James Meaton,
in Bangalore, India around 1910 and traveled to Burma.
Mercy Fairman, born around 1892, was the daughter of a Mr. Brunsdon (a Scot
according to one aunt) and Harriet Cason (daughter of Charles Beck, married
1875, India). Mercy had a brother, Herbert and sister, Blossom.
Mr. Brunsdon died and Harriet Cason re-married a Mr. Fairman (Irish,
according to the aunt). They had, I think, 4 more children (Elma, Lotti,
Tony, Donald). My mother and aunt are well into their 80's and not all of
the information they provide is consistent.
Robert Meaton had a brother, Ernest, and a sister, (Lillian) Tilly. In
India, Tilly Meaton married a Mr. Hingle (spelling very uncertain), was
widowed, and then married Mr. Brown (?Harry), the manager of a car company.
Robert Meaton was a "chemist" working for the Burma Oil Company in
Yenangyaung, Burma. Robert died on a ship going to an exposition. Mercy
died of diabetes, in about 1925, 2 years after Robert.
Robert and Mercy had 11 children: Helen, Cyril, Harold, Norman, Ann,
Muriel, Iris, Gladys, Gerald, Robert, and Beryl.
