John BUSBY died on 26 Mar 1884 in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. He was born 1806 approx in Edinburgh, Scotland. unmarried Parents: John BUSBY and Sarah KENNEDY.

John BUSBY was born on 24 Mar 1765 in Alnwick, Northumberland, England. Before 1824 he was a Civil Engineer. John followed his fathers occupation and at 19 was manager of a coal mine. For several years he was employed as a minerla surveyor and engineer in England, Scotland, and Ireland. He made water and mineral surveys of several counties in Scotland, provided a water supply for Leith Fort, and was engaged on such public works as the Caledonian Canal, Stirling Castle, Lock Ryan, and the new botanical Gardens at Edinburgh. He received two of the Highland Society's highest premiums, one for inventing machinery for ascertaining the nature of rock strata by boring, the other for a method of sinking through quicksands, clay and gravel beds. In 1810 he was employed on the Irish Estate of the marquess of Downshire.

John claimed association in these various activities wit such eminent engineers as Stevenson, Telford and Rennie, and produced six impressive testimonials when he applied to the Colonial Office for employment in New South Wales in 1921. He was also recommended by J. T. Brigge.

He immigrated in 1824 to Australia. Agreemnt and instructions Re Mr. John Busby on his preceeding to the Colony of New South Wales as Mineral Surveyor and Civil Engineer where he and his family arrived in 1824.

Under Secretay Wilmont to Mr John Busby,

I am directed by Lord Bathurst to acquaint you, inreply to your application to proceed to New South Wales as mineral surveyor and civil engineer, that his lordship feels disposed to authorise the Governor of that Colony to issue to you a sum of Two hundred pounds per annum on the condition that you give the Government the benefit of your services for two hundred days in each year, such salary to be continued to you for three years from the date of your employment in the service of the Government after your arrival in New South Wales; at the end of which period the Governor will be instructed to allot you a grant of land as a renumeration for your services to the Colony.

I am moreover to point out to you that no house will be provided for you unless your whole time throughout the year is devoted to the Public Service and that you must not under any circumstances, expect to receive rations for yourself and family.

In the event of your acceding to these terms, a passage will be forthwith ordered for yourself and family on board some vessel sailing from the river for Port Jackson.

John and his family sailed from Leith on the Triton and arrived in Port Jackson in February, 1824. George, their eldest son, followed later after completing his medical studies in Edinburgh.

I am also instructed to acquaint you that, if your sons who may proceed with you, take with them capital to the value of five hundred pounds, they will be considered as settlers and have grants of land with the usual indulgence of convict labour.

I am etc. R. Wilmont, Under Secretary.
Downing Strret, 29th March, 1823.

After 1824 he was a Mineral Suerveyor and Civil Engineer in Australia. John's immigation voyage on the Triton in 1824 stayed for some weeks at Hobart Town, where John made a "survey for water and coals". In Feb 1825 he was asked to explore Van Diemans's Land "so far as Minerals and Geology are concerned, more especially with respect to Coals and Iron", but he went to New Zealand instead to refloat the government brig "Elizabeth Henrietta" which was aground at Goulborn Island. for this task he was paid 300 pounds.

In 1826 he went to report on coal deposits near Newcastle for the Australian Agricultural Co.

His most important work was the construction of Sydney's first regular water supply. John began the survey soon after his arrival in 1824 and his first report , made in June 1825, envisaged a supply pumped through iron pipes from the Lachlan springs (now in Centinial Park) to a reservoir in Hyde Park. This plan which would cost 12,000 pounds was apparently approved, but in January 1826 John submitted a second report which recommended the driving of a mine or bore for thw whole distance of more than two miles; although this would cost 20,000 pounds, he believed it would ultimately prove cheaper in running costs. Surveyor-General Oxley and William Dumaresq agreed and the tunneling commenced in September 1827.

John declared that the work could be completed in three years, and as his initial three year engagement had expired he was engaged at a salary of 500 pounds, with his son Alexander engaged as an assistant at a salary of 100 pounds. In October 1828 his salary was confirmed by the Colonial Office but he was refused an assistant. Subsequently in May 1831 he engaged his youngest son William to assist him without government pay.

Progress on the scheme was slow and this arroused public criticism and in 1832 the Colonial Office requested a report on the project. The next year the Legislative Council also enquired into the project, and with no censure John recommended that the remaining work on the tunnel be contracted out. Govenor Bourke, however, attributed the delay to poor supervision of the convict workers and in 1834 reported to London that the proper direction of such unwilling labour was prehaps "a duty incompatible with John's age and infirmities", and that he had little confidence in John's professional skills. Accordingly Bourke appointed John's son William as overseer to the project at a salary of 200 pounds, the sum to be deducted from John's salary.

John protested to London at this treatment and at his own request continued to superintend at no salary until his claim was decided. The Colonial Office approved Bourke's action, but in 1836 John's position petition for an investigation was supported by a large number of Sydney residents. Before another session of the legilative Council in 1837, the scheme was completed, and John claimed that if he had taken a contract for the project and had at his disposal proper equipment, skilled labourers and a proper overseerer, he could have completed the project in half the time. Major Barney, whose professional opinion Bourke respected, testified that the work was "very fairly done", considering the means available to John. The committee recommended that 1,000 pounds be paid to John as a gratuity in addition to his salary arreas.

John was apparently involved financially in his efforts to complete the Bore and had to sell his home, Rockwell and grant of 8 acres at Pott's Point. The house was still in existence in 1950 in Rockwall Crescent and was part of a nurses' home.

The scheme sucessfully supplied Sydney with water until 1868, the yeild between 300,000 and 400,000 gallons per day. The overflow from Busby's Bire was a Stand-pipe in Hyde Park. After 1880 it supplied water for the Botanical Gardens until parts of it caved in and it was abandoned about 1930.

During a calamitous drought in 1838-39, when no rain fell, Busby's Bore saved Sydney Settlement (then 20,000 souls) from Disaster.

Between 1849-54 there was another severe drought with mean rainfall well below the 10 year mean. The City Council directed their surveyor to examine Lachlan Swamp and the tunnel to se if Busby's Bore could be improved.

In 1869 a commission appointed by Govenor Young in 1867 agreed that the present hopelessly inadequate sources of supply be abandoned and water be brought from the Nepean River. Work began in 1880 and water was supplied to Crown Strret in 1886. This amplification scheme supplied Sydney until 1940.

Intersetingly, in 1869, Thomas Woore (? relationship to Annie Woore) the 5th Commisioner, presented a minority report recommending a high dam on the Warragamba River but engineering knowledge and materials at that time were inadequate to build such a dam. In 1908-09 a severe water sortage in Sydney prompted a re-investigation of the Warragamba scheme. The engineer employed on the work was W. D. Donkin, B.E. Assoc. M Inst. C.E., a great-grandson of both John Busby and Thomas Woore. At that time Sydney's population was approx. 600,000. In 1940 a 60 foot weir was built on the Warragamba and the water pumped to Prospect. Work on the storage dam 400 feet high was then started by the Metropolitan District Water Board. At that time Sydney's populaton was approx 1.25 million.

He Granted small property in 1828 in Nepean River near Emu Plains and eight acres at Wolloomoloo Cove for a town house. He retired in 1837 in "Kirkton", Branxton, Hunter River, New South Wales, Australia. a 2,000 acre property which he was grated in 1835. He died on 10 May 1857 in "Kirkton", Branxton, Hunter River, New South Wales, Australia.

He was buried on 12 May 1857 in "Kirkton", Branxton, Hunter River, New South Wales, Australia. Inscription on the gravestone reads "Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord" The first member of the family to come to Australia was John Busby (1765-1857). Hew as born in Alnwick, Northumberland, and was trained by his father, a coal master, in his own business. He gradually developed a special skill in mine location and surveying, and adopted the profession of mineral surveyor and civil engineer. He exercised his profession on the "Downshire" estates in Ireland, and later settled in Scotland where he surveyed several counties for water and minerals. He came under notice of J.T. Bigge, Esq., who recommended him to the Colonial Office as a fit person to supervise coal mining at Newcastle, N.S.W., and to devise a satisfactory water supply for Sydney. He was engaged in March, 1823, as mineral surveyor, and Civil Engineer to the Colony of New South Wales by Lord Bathurst. He arrived in Sydney on February 24th, 1824. He was at once sent off to Newcastle to superintend coal mining and to construct a breakwater. He then spent several months in New Zealand having been sent there to salvage a Government brig, the "Henrietta Elizabeth" which had gone ashore. A war vessel, H.M.S. Tees, had failed to refloat her, as a last resort John Busby was sent from Sydney, and with the aid of only six men he refloated here in 26 days. During the time spent in New Zealand he experienced great hardships and danger, in fact, on one occasion, he was taken by the Maoris who designed him for the "piece de resistance" of a meal, the earth oven was heated, and the dispatching blow was even aimed at his head, but in throwing up his arms to protect himself he brushed off the wig which he wore. This threw the Maoris into consternation and wonder which reprieved him and give him protection as a superior being. On his return to Sydney, he designed and carried out the first water supply of consequence for Sydney. A bore, or tunnel, was driven from the Botany Swamps to Hyde Park. The work was started in 1827 and finished in 1837 with convict labour. Parts of the tunnel are now being filled in, (July, 1935),as there is a possibility of danger from subsidence caused by the vibration of heavy traffic. He retired in 1837, when he received a gratuity of £1000 and a grant of 2,000 acres of land between Branxton and Singleton.
