The ABC has picked up two awards in the prestigious Prix Italia competition, held recently in Italy.

... and ABC Classic FM's The Listening Room program, The Ears Outside My Listening Room, by composer Colin Black, was the winner in The Radio Music - Composed Work category.

The Prix Italia is an international radio, television and web competition. Now in its 55th year, entry is limited to a select group of about 75 public and private broadcasters, from more than 60 countries.  Previous winners include Samuel Beckett and Harold Pinter.

"It is equivalent of, I think, an Olympic gold medal," says executive producer of the ABC Acoustic Art Unit, Robyn Ravlich.  "It has the same effect. Doors will open for Colin, all over the world. He will be introduced to the radio community worldwide." Colin's program, a collection of oral histories from around Australia, entwined with music, was produced during his residency, supported by the Australia Council, with The Listening Room. It was commended for the "exceptional treatment of its subject matter and the creation in words and music of a powerful, emotional mood without overstatement".
