OUR  COLOURS

On this page we would like to give a brief explanation of some of the colours we are breeding & show some examples of the various colours & characteristics specific to Duns & Buckskins.

Our Australian Ponies are mostly what is known as ‘basic, standard Buckskin’. These colours range from pale cream to the deep gold with some having either Black or Brown overlays. Genetically Buckskins are bred from a dilute gene which basically dilutes the body colour of the horses coat, e.g. Bay/Black dilutes to cream/gold & if two dilute colours are mated they have the potential to produce what is known as a double dilute which is usually a very pale cream with blue eyes. These are known as Cremello (the double dilute of Palomino) & Perlino (the double dilute of Buckskin)

The Dun Shetlands we breed are true or native Duns. They are genetically different from the Buckskin getting their colour from the ‘Dun’ gene not the ‘Dilute’ gene. The true Dun can be Homozygous unlike the Buckskin.

Registered Shetlands of pure Dun breeding are quite rare in Australia as many breeders unknowingly cross this colour with the ‘dilute colours’. By carefully researching pedigrees we have endeavored to keep our Duns free of any dilute breeding. Our aim is to breed Dun Shetlands that will not only breed true to type but also true to the Dun colour .

We hope to eventually be able to show an example of most of the various shades of Buckskin & Duns on this page & hope you enjoy the following examples we already have.

All photos are of ponies we own or have bred & the above comments are our own opinions obtained after more than 25 years of experience breeding these colours.
