Be Still
[Back]

Do you ever think what it must have looked like to the aboriginals living here hundreds... thousands of years ago? What an awe inspiring sight it is even to us today... but we've become accustomed to seeing all manner of wonderful sights while travelling, or in endless book and magazine photographs, travelogues on TV, magnificent scenery in movies... Try to imagine for a moment that you've never seen anything but flat, barren desert plain, you've lived in a little humpy made of stringy tree bark all your life... and one day you go walkabout and come across Uluru! I mean, you would feel pretty blown away, now, wouldn't you??? No wonder the aboriginals have such strong spiritual ties to the land in Australia... that's something I'll say a bit more about later. OK, where now? I have to reign in my own imagination a bit this time, and try to think how the story goes from here. Perhaps I should leave you here for a while just to soak up the atmosphere a bit... If you haven't felt it yet, you're missing out. There's a stillness here... like we've stepped out of time momentarily. Wonderful as the view is from the air you don't sense that until you come close from the ground and take the time to still yourself and just gaze at the Rock for a while... |

I'm tempted not to put a link here, so you'll be more likely to linger a while and experience the timelessness of the place... but I have an inkling that it doesn't exactly translate to electronic media... Oh well... |
