Traffic Movement

When the Spit Bridge opens the traffic signals (red or green) will indicate which group of waiting boats will go through first. Vessels going downstream will be given the grren light first unless a ferry is waiting to go upstream in which case the ferry and other waiting vessels will get the green light first.

The code of practice for sail boats intending to pass under the bridge requires that they should furl sails when within 100 meters of the bridge. Do not 'tailgate' vessels ahead.

Some vessels can pass under the bridge (northern span). The maximum clearance for the northern span is 6.4 m at M.H.W.S. (Remember large tour ferries use this span routinely. Use caution!)

Generally Downstream boats have right of way.
