Senior Constable Mulhall begs to report to Superintendent Brown that between 4 and 5 pm on the 25th instant he received information that Bush Rangers were at Mr Blanche's Public House at Church Gully four miles from Uralla. SC Mulhall and Const Walker immediately proceeded to the place riding at top speed. SC Mulhall who reached the place first was met by two men riding grey horses close to Blanche's. One of the two fired on the senior constable who immediately returned fire. He was facing in the direction of Blanche's, the men, of whom one fired, facing to Uralla. SC Mulhall turned his horse round and pursued the two men, both of whom wheeled round and met the SC again. Shots were exchanged. Const Walker coming up at the time the SC called out to 'go ahead, shoot the wretch. We have exchanged shots.' Both men were together at this time heading towards Kentucky Creek. Constable Walker's horse being fresh took a lead, the senior constable after him. Constable Walker fired two shots at this time. SC Mulhall's horse was winded and could not make headway for some time. He lost sight of all for a short time but very soon again came close to Constable Walker and observing only one man of the two wheeled his horse in the direction where, if it was Thunderbolt, he was likely to go. SC Mulhall was scouring the bush in all directions for five hours, in proof of which SC Mulhall's riding whip was found close to where the dead body lay, that is the body of Ward. SC Mulhall may also mention that he called at a shepherd's hut on Kentucky Creek. Jerry O'Brien is the shepherd. The SC was thinking he might find one of the men there and he got a surcingle as his girths burst in the chase crossing Kentucky Creek, which he crossed several times. SC Mulhall got back to Uralla at 10 o'clock and being informed by the mail guard that one of the men was shot, the SC went back to Blanche's and recognised one of the men whom he was in pursuit of - took him into custody and he was discharged at the inquiry.
Signed:-
John Mulhall, Senior Constable
S.D. Brown Esq,
Superintendent of Police

Constable Mulhall evidently did not give any report to the hearing held on the 26th May. However if one compares this report to the one recorded at the hearing given by Constable Walker there are some glaring discrepencies. Mulhall recognised the body as being dead before he left the area after Walker had left. He deliberately said "the body of Ward" and did not name him as Frederick Ward. During the chase , "he very soon again came close to Constable Walker" but obviously left him alone as Walker claimed he alone was present when he shot the person "Never saw the deceased before that I am aware of." yet in his rewritten second report which was falsely sent to Sydney as the records from the hearing, he claimed "the constable galloped on and saw two men on horseback, the Bushranger Ward made for the road, yet at the time of the chase and at the hearing, Walker did not know the name of the person he was chasing..."
