Local Bushranger legend of Thunderbolt,
inspires Song Writer of the Year finalist

Tim Upjohn (as Const A.B. Walker), Bill Upjohn (as Captain Thunderbolt) and singer/songwriter Graham Rodger

Story: Gary Fry

Acclaimed country music singer / songwriter, Graham Rodger, has written and recorded a ballad that is straight from the pages of the history of the New England area, the story of Captain Thunderbolt.

“Thunderbolt” is one of two songs that Graham Rodger has in the finals of the Annual National Song Writing Contest of Australia, to be held on Wednesday 24th January, in Tamworth.

One of Australia’s leading balladeers for over fifteen years, Queensland’s Graham Rodger is passionate about the character and history of Australia, particularly in the bush; that passion is evident in his approach to songwriting. “I think we are losing a lot of the stories from our past, and songs can help keep that history alive. Thunderbolt is an iconic part of the history of the New England region, and particularly important to Uralla. This bushranger’s story is one worth telling, and I think it has made for a song that can enable listeners to imagine the adventure and dramatic conclusion,” he said.

The idea to write the song “Thunderbolt” began when I met Morna and Barry Sinclair (a Thunderbolt historian and descendant) from Uralla. Barry told me the story of Captain Thunderbolt (or Frederick Ward) and what he meant to the people around Uralla and I thought I knew it would make a great Australian song,” reflected Mr. Rodger.

I think anything that promotes the story of Thunderbolt, also promotes Uralla and the broader New England area – he is part of our heritage,” said Barry Sinclair. “Of course, I believe that the song recounts the legend of Thunderbolt, the truth is that he did not die in Kentucky Creek but escaped to America and I look forward to a second song telling that historical story.”

Graham Rodger has just spent a couple of days ahead of the Country Music Festival soaking up the historical settings and bushranger spirit around Uralla. He has seen the landmarks his song words refer to and seen a re-enactment of Thunderbolt riding across the hills near Uralla, being chased by Constable A. B. Walker, who, according to the legend, fired the fatal shot that took the bushranger down. Mr. Rodger said he is happy with his song and how it reflects the character of the Thunderbolt story as well as the Uralla of today and yester-year.

“Thunderbolt”, the new CD from Graham Rodger, featuring the ballad of the bushranger himself, was launched in Tamworth at the Frog and Toad Convention Centre on Goonoo Goonoo Road, at 1:30pm on the 25th January 2007.

Thunderbolt

On the eleventh of September back in 1863
A young man by the name of Frederick Ward
Escaped from lawful custody with a vow that he'd live free
And so the Legend "Thunderbolt" was born.

He traveled far and wide across the north of New South Wales
As a bushranger and horseman of renown,
Respected by the settlers for the courage he displayed,
Despised by the Police who tracked him down.

He became the scourge of Cobb and Co, the hotels and the stores
As the words “Bail Up” resounded 'cross the land,
Too cunning for his victims and just too fast for the Law.
Thunderbolt would always gain the upper hand.

For six long years he plied his trade, a victim of the times,
When the governments and law had an iron hold,
And the punishment they handed down would far outweigh the crime,
All Australians felt for Captain Thunderbolt

Thunderbolt, Thunderbolt,
Do you still ride the wild New England like you did so long ago?
Do the icy winter winds that chilled your body to the bone
Still whisper the name Thunderbolt?

The Word went out one afternoon that Thunderbolt was seen,
Near Blanch's Inn south of Uralla town.
Two troopers armed with pistols, rode to bring the outlaw in,
Dead or alive, no taking chances now.

Well Thunderbolt took up the lead, he was racing like the wind,
But his horse began to fail and lose its ground,
And young trooper, Alex Walker, was now quickly closing in
His pistol drawn to bring the outlaw down.

They came upon a water hole that blocked the outlaws path.
He knew now that his race was finally run,
He plunged into the water with the trooper closing fast,
He cried, I'll die before the law will take me in.

A shot rang out with a deadly thud as the bullet found its mark.
The water in the creek turned crimson red.
One final lunge for freedom but his strength was failing fast,
A moment later Thunderbolt lay dead.

Thunderbolt, Thunderbolt,
Do you still ride the wild New England like you did so long ago?
Do the icy winter winds that chilled your body to the bone
Still whisper the name Thunderbolt?
Still whisper the name Thunderbolt.

About Graham Rodger…

Graham Rodger Jan 2007

Born and raised in the rural town of Gympie in south-east Queensland. Graham began to write songs professionally in 1991. In 1992, he received a phone call from the late Slim Dusty. Slim asked permission to record a song that Graham had written, and the song "You Can't Take Australia From Me" was subsequently recorded and released on the album "Ringer From the Top End". Slim recorded a number of Graham's songs. Other country music recording artists who have chosen Graham's songs include Brian Letton, Glenn Jones, Dean Perrett, Tom Maxwell, Jeff Brown, Bob Easter, Melissa Bajric, Nathan Charlton, Brad Blanck and Dave McCallum.

In July 1998, Graham released his first album, "Steering Wheel Drovers". The album contained all his own songs and achieved considerable success around the country. One of the tracks, "The Drysdale River", reached the top ten in the Australian Country Music Charts. From this album came a string of Award nominations, which set Graham firmly on a new path as a professional entertainer, appearing at major Country Music Festivals around Australia, including Tamworth, Bungendore, Emerald and Mildura.

The year 2002 saw the release of yet another album of self penned songs, "The Colours of Australia". This album capitalised on the succcess of the first, and set the wheels in motion for a number of finals nominations and major awards at the 2003 and 2004 Tamworth Country Music Festivals.

May 2004 - Graham released his third album "A Gypsy's Life" under the Austrak Music label. This album has eclipsed the success of the first two albums and captures the wonderful writing and vocals qualities of Graham. The Album contains the traditional ballad as well as comedy, love and human intrest songs. It was a finalist in The Album of the Year 2005. "The Matilda Highway" won the TSA Songwriter's Salute Award 2005 and "Lets Keep Australia, Australia" won the Tasmanian & New Zealand Songwriting Contest 2005. "The Matilda Highway" came in third in this competition. Wow what a great success story.

In January 2005 the album "This Old Guitar of Mine" was released at Tamworth. It received excellent reviews. Once again you will be transported to the theatre of your minds with these wonderful songs. He has four major awards, National and Salute Awards for "Missing in Action", Best Bush Ballad "Where The Cooper Flows", and Peoples Choice Award "Country Towns" from this Album in the Competitions at Tamworth 2006. Graham reached the final five in the Ballad Section for a Golden guitar with his song from this Album "Where The Cooper Flows". This album is the highest award winning album to date. Winning three Tamworth Songwriters Awards in the one year has never been achieved before so Graham is part of history now.

Graham's fifth Album "Muster on The Great Divide" was released at Tamworth 2006 and will have nominations in the competitions for 2007. Preview reports have given it rave reviews. This album has different music backing and there is a lovely duo with Julie as well as great harmonies. Graham has included a song in tribute to our modern ANZACS with the Song "Battle of Long Tan" it is a very graphic account of this battle 40 years ago when our young men overcame such unbelievable odds to gain victory. The Song "Down At the Pub on a Friday Night" is a song that will rival "Have a Beer with Duncan", haven't met anyone yet, who has heard it, who cannot relate to its sentiments. "Woolshed Ball" has a touch of rock n roll feel, and "The Bushman" will bring tears to your eyes. Graham is proud to present this new album for your enjoyment. He can't believe it but radio presenters have told him that this is the best to date. Hope it gives him the Golden Guitar which he justly deserves.

2006 Release of first DVD "True Blue Country" - A 1 hour video of Graham performing 10 of his popular songs. The DVD has been professionally produced by PTH-Team Video Productions Sydney Phone: (02) 9522 7867 and footage has been collected from across Australia.
