This children's story book on Captain Thunderbolt and his fictional companion Ben Cross recently won the 2005 Premier's Award for the best Children's novel of 2004. It is a superbly written book well deserving its rewards. It has been available in Schools through the Scholastic Schools Book Club and is highly recommended as a book for the young. While it is about a ficticional character, it is well researched and, most of its stories are based on well known facts. My congratulations to Allan Baillie for writing this book and for further promoting the story of Thunderbolt among the students in our schools.

"Ben Cross has been orphaned by the smallpox epdiemic and he has come to live with his brutal uncle, who beats and abuses him. So when his mate Thommo suggests they run away and join the bushranger Thunderbolt, Ben feels he has nothing to lose."
"For the next two years Ben travels with Thunderbolt's gang and family. He befriends Thunderbolt's wife, Mary Ann and their two small children, helping with the chores of cooking and providing for the campsite. He acts as cockatoo (lookout) for the gang when they conduct their raids and hold-ups. At the same time, Ben experiences the highs and lows of the bushranging life. He sees his mate Thommo killed by a trooper during a shoot out, lives with the threat of being caught and imprisoned, and learns about friendship and loyalty."
"Riding With Thunderbolt is part of the
"My Story" series from Scholastic and, as such, is written in diary format in the voice of young Ben. Readers aged 10 and over will be drawn into the tale by this first person narrative which enables the author not to impose an opinion of the bushranger lifestyle, but rather to show its impact on one young life."
I find Allan Baillie's books for children a worthy addition to any library, and they have nearly always received nominations for state and federal awards. This book won the NSW Premier's History Awards for 2005.
The book can be purchased from Scholastic or should be available from your local bookshop. It will soon be published in a hard back edition, which will make it even better value.
