THE HISTORY OF OUR SEARCH

* * * * * *

13th January 2000 : Email sent from Australia to Jim Treuel whose email address was found on the internet.

17th January 2000 : Reply received from Jim Treuel who resides in California USA. Jim's great grandfather Claus Mathias Treuel went to the USA from Wedel Germany prior to 1882. Our Johann Hinrich Treuel was this Claus Mathias Treuel's Uncle. We were absolutely thrilled to have found these relatives, and, look forward to meeting other Treuels over the Internet or in person, in the future.

21st January 2000 : Keith Treuel, wrote letters to the 3 Treuels listed in the Wedel Germany telephone directory.

31st January 2000 : Email received from Toby Treuel brother of Jim Treuel also from California USA.

4th February 2000 : Email received from Silvia whose maiden name was Treuel. Silvia and her sister Dorit have since made contact. Dorit had been in Australia twice before, the last time in 1998, but did not realise that she had relatives here. With the help of Silvia and Dorit and their families we hope that we are well on the way to un-ravelling our family history. As Jim Treuel from the USA stated in one of his emails
" What a wonderful way to start the new Millennium. "

The task of retracing our family history has been aided by the very generous assistance of many people via the Internet, and, we gratefully thank those individuals. Special mention should also be made of my cousin, John Ross, who, in the past, had attempted to retrace the family history. Much of what has been achieved to date is a result of his earlier and continuing efforts.

We have discovered that around 1870 there was a village in West Prussia called Treuel or Treul, situated near Neuenburg. We now have a map showing Treuel/Treul as well as a map showing the location of Neuenburg, thanks to Silvia's husband Rainer's Uncle. If the town Treuel existed today, it would be in Poland just south of the town of Nowe, about 100 kilometres South of Gdansk. The town Treuel is listed many times on the West Prussian Land Register 1772/1773 ordered by Frederick the Great. On the register the name has been spelt both Treuel and Treul. Also on this register there are 3 other spellings which could be associated with our name Truhl, Truhle and Truwell.

22nd February 2000 : Letters were sent to all Treuels throughout the world for whom we had an address, requesting that they make contact. Included in each letter were the current draft copies of the family trees of the German, American and Australian Treuels. We eagerly await any responses. The trees have dramatically changed since these letters were sent and copies can be downloaded from this site.

3rd March 2000 : Our first reply to overseas letters was received from Gerhard and Ute Treuel from Germany. We are very pleased that they have made contact and we are sure that they will join with the USA, Wedel and Australian Treuels in investigating any common ancestry. We welcome Gerd, Ute and their family to our growing web of world-wide Treuels.

13th March 2000 : We received a letter from Waltraud in Germany whose maiden name was Treuel. There are three towns where the Treuels appear to have originated from in Germany - Balje, Isensee and Wedel. These towns and other towns mentioned in these pages are all in Northern Germany and in reasonably close proximity to one another. It appears that any interaction between the three groups of Treuel (if it ever existed) had been lost many decades ago. Waltraud is from the Balje Treuels, Gerhard is from the Isensee Treuels and Silvia and Dorit along with the USA and Australian Treuels are from Wedel. Waltraud knows of Treuels from her side of the family who also went to the USA, but we have not had a reply from them as yet. Other German towns where over time the name Treuel has appeared in the records, are, Hamburg, Osten, Schuttdamm, Stade, Oberaltendorf, Oberhull, Cuxhaven, Kranenweide, Hemmoor and Geversdorf.

20th March 2000 : We received an email explaining that Ute, and her family, whilst web surfing, had found information regarding a Jacques Treuel, his wife Madelaine Treuel (nee Legrey), and their children Janne Treuel christened on 19th September 1686, and Pierre Treuel christened on 21st February 1692. These Treuels were French Huguenots baptised at the French Protestant Church, Threadneedle Street, London. We do not know if they are related to any of us, but, in the 16th and 17th centuries Huguenots were persecuted for their religion, expelled from France, and given sanctuary in many countries including Germany, Prussia, Britain and the USA. We have since come across the name Treuil and we are checking to see if there are any links.

Also included were details of Sofie Elisabeth Treuel born 23rd October 1854, who married Johan Hinrich Hinz in Wedel on 18th August 1878. Sofie's parents were Claus Mathias Treuel and Maria Magdalena Treuel (nee Biesterfeld).

Ute engaged a lady who will research old church records for further listings of Treuel. Waltraud, by searching similar records, has found many names dating back to the 1750's. The old tradition of naming the first sons after fathers, uncles and other relatives makes the task somewhat more difficult but Ute and Waltraud are working to find the link between the 3 Treuel clans. Silvia visited her local cemetery and obtained more Wedel information. We are most grateful for the work that the German Treuels are doing and look forward to seeing the results. Thanks guys we really appreciate your efforts.

3rd May 2000 : Ute provided us with information from the church records. The oldest record is of Abel Treuels, who was born 1689 and who died on the 4th July 1717, (please refer to the family tables for the various clans).

Some time back Gerd and Ute sent us details of Aussie Treuels who live in South Australia of whom we had no knowledge. In reply to 4 letters sent we received an email from Neil Treuel who also has a sister Sue. Neil's stepfather was William (Billy) Treuel from Bendigo. His actual name was William (Billy) Parker, as he had not been adopted by his stepfather George but had chosen to use both surnames on occasion. When Neil and Sue were children, their mother married Billy Treuel and consequently their names were changed from Tucker to Treuel by deed poll. Neil's great stepgrandfather was Charles (Charlie) Treuel brother of John Henry (Harry) Treuel. We look forward to hearing more from Neil and Sue. Thanks Ute, some long lost relatives found.

During April 2000, John Ross informed us that he had found a death certificate for a girl, Alsebe Treuel, born in 1881 who died on 12/3/1882 aged 10 months at Neilborough near Bendigo. She was buried at Raywood Cemetery on the 14/3/1882. Her father and mother were Johann Hinrich Treuel and Anna Louisa Witt. As Anna Elsabe Brand was Johann's mother, this little girl was probably named after her. Alsebe died of Pneumonia.

John also found an old metal photograph of Anna Louisa Antonie Witt, our great grandmother. If anyone has old photographs or records relating to our family we would love to have a copy so that they may be distributed throughout the family. We would particularly like a photograph of Johann Hinrich Treuel if one exists.

22nd May 2000 : I decided to place the maiden names of the women who married Treuels from olden times on some Internet message boards. Whilst there I noticed that there were already messages for Schmidt, Brand(t), Warnke and Ahlf , so we decided to check them out. Schmidt and Brand(t) are very common German names so that will take some time, but Warnke and Ahlf only had a couple of references. I emailed a Lois on the Warnke name and a Kent and Patty Ahlf. Kent and Patty replied and recognised some of the names on our list so they shall get back to me when they have compared the names. They mentioned a Metta Truel(s) from Bruch Germany from 1650 who married a Parm Ahlf. Bruch is in the same area as Osten, Isensee etc. Lois's Warnkes were from a similar region of Germany to ours so the investigation shall continue.

We sent a copy of Lois's email to Ute. Ute's cousin had married a Gerken, one of the names on Lois's email. What's more, both of the Gerkens come from the same German town and are possibly related. Lois, who lives in Florida USA, and, Ute who lives in Germany are now in contact.

9th June 2000 : Gerd and Ute faxed some of the church searches that they had organised. These have been added to the tables.

12th June 2000 : Les Killen who married into the Bendigo Treuel family contacted us on , and supplied us with many important dates. We informed him that we were in contact with the Adelaide Treuels and he was pleased to hear it. Thanks for all of your efforts Les.

Gerd informed us that Wedel was actually a part of Denmark up until 1864 when it became part of Prussia. It wasn't until 1870/1871 that Wedel was considered to be German. This may be important for 2 reasons. It means the Treuel name could be Danish, German, Prussian, French, or Swedish in origin and it may better indicate when Johann Hinrich came to Australia. On John Henry Treuel's birth certificate in 1878 it lists Johann's place of birth as Wedel Holstein Germany. If he had come to Australia prior to 1864 he would have most likely listed Denmark as his place of birth or, between 1864 and 1870/1871 Prussia as his place of birth.

3rd July 2000 : Several emails were sent to addresses where the name Treul, Treull, Truell or Truel appeared as a result of Internet searches. These emails were sent to investigate whether the names over time, may have been substituted for each other. It is possible that people who have the surname variation of Treuel now were a part of the Treuel family or vise versa. We would encourage any people who have one of these other spellings of the name to also make contact so we may share information. In English speaking countries Treul/ Treuel/ Truel/ Truell are pronounced Trule whilst in Europe they are pronounced Troy-el. We look forward to any contact made from any of these other Treuels.

8th July 2000 : We received more emails from people with the other spellings of Treuel. Once again this is most exciting. We welcome all those that have made contact and we feel sure that in a fairly short amount of time we shall be able to find out if any links between the various Treuels, exist. We have also heard from people interested in the names Witt, Perrin, von Bargen, Stein and Brand. We also had heard that a Truel in the USA had been changed to Trull. On investigation it appears that the surname Trull is definitely of English origin and it is unlikely that there is a link to Treuel as this change seems to be a one time event. Thanks to all the Trulls who made contact.

Recently I had a long conversation with Linda Treuel (nee Pilcher) who was the wife of the late George Treuel. George who had previously been married to Jessica Parker was the stepfather of William (Billy) Treuel. Linda, aged 84, is sending us a picture of Charlie Treuel, his wife Eva, and all of his ten children. Thanks Linda.

17th July 2000 : All family tree drafts are completed, and have been sent. If anyone has any information that needs to be added to complete their families section of the trees please email or post it to me as soon as possible. We have collected so much information in the last 3 months, and, with Waltraud soon to finish her efforts at the churches we are hoping that the link to the 3 Treuel clans can be found. Thanks, once again for all of your efforts everyone.

21st July 2000 : We sent an email to Jurgen Treue whose name we found on a message board. Jurgen who now lives in Australia will check if there is any shared history. Jurgen's father believes that the names Treue and Treuel are separate names.

Whilst searching through internet files we came across an area of Germany that is apparently called Treuel. It is not listed on any map that we have seen but it is said to be Latitute: 52 ° 21m North and Longitude: 11 ° 48m East, which places it just near Tangerhutte due West of Berlin.

25th July 2000 : We received a photograph of Charlie Treuel, his wife and most of the Bendigo Treuels from Linda Treuel. Thanks Linda for the photograph.

3rd August 2000 : We emailed information to Mr Walter Struve at the State Library - Victoria so that he could include details of our family in the German Immigrants project currently being undertaken at the library. Thanks Walter for your efforts on behalf of the Treuel family.

9th August 2000 : Keith Treuel rang the Raywood Cemetery Trust near Bendigo Victoria to attempt to find how many Treuels had been buried there. Mary Absabe Treuel spelt Treule (another new variation) was buried there in 1882. Their records show that she was aged 12 months when she died. This leaves two possibilities. Either Johann Hinrich Treuel and Anna Witt had twin girls one named Mary Absabe and the other named Alsebe or the more likely (even though there is a history of multiple births in the family) that they are one in the same child. We suspect that this child's name was Mary Elisabeth Alsebe Treuel who died of Pneumonia on the 12th March 1882, aged 10 months, at Neilborough Bendigo, and who was buried at Raywood Cemetery near Bendigo. The death certificate previously obtained by John Ross had a dated correction to the spelling from Treul to Treuel.

The second important news was that many of the people who died in Raywood in the late 1800's were not buried in Raywood Cemetery as one would expect but were sent to Whitehills Cemetery nearby. The Cemetery records for these people are held by the Bendigo Cemetery Trust. Hopefully we can find date of Johann Hinrich's death in their records it will help tie things together.

15th August 2000 : Toby emailed informing me that he had given his cousin Lyn my email. Lyn is the daughter of Larraine, his father Auguste's sister. He has also given me Lyn's email and so copies of our trees have already been sent. We welcome Lyn and her family to the Great Treuel Hunt.Speaking of hunting, Toby's father recently gave him a shotgun which had belonged to his great grandfather Claus Matthias Treuel who was born on the 23/9/1856. This makes the gun a pretty old one.

17th August 2000 : I received our first email from Lyn. Lyn told me that many years ago her grandfather's house burnt down destroying many old documents and records. Lyn has agreed to help supply some of the USA Treuel history. One of her 3 sons, Sam, married an Aussie girl from the Gold Coast here in Queensland. Great choice Sam. I hope that Sam will look us up if ever he is over here visiting his inlaws.

19th August 2000 : I finalised the Huttenlauer family tree for Ute. Other surnames that appear on this tree are Rathgeber, Beckes, Treuel, Viehbrock, Knorr, Krauss, Widmaier and Schmidt. Lyn has also assisted me in completing more of the USA Treuel tree. Thanks Lyn.

21st August 2000 : Keith received an email from Stanley and Kim Ebbage. Stan is the son of Doris Ebbage nee Treuel and Stanley Ebbage from the Bendigo Treuels. Already an email with the family trees has been sent and we look forward to sharing other information with the Ebbages. We also received an email from Ross and Denise Burdett who had been invited over to Stan and Kim's to view the webpage. Ross is the son of Eva Burdett nee Treuel and James W. Burdett. Ross, Denise, Stan and Kim have supplied loads of information regarding the Bendigo Treuels and we really appreciate their efforts.

28th August 2000 : We received information back from the Bendigo Cemetery Trust on regarding Treuels that had been buried in the 3 cemeteries that they administer. William H. Truel was buried on the 10th January 1898 aged 73 years. We have no knowledge of any William H. Treuel. It is possible that this person could actually be Johann Hinrich Treuel. By subtracting his age 73 from 1898 we get 1825 which is about the time when Johann was born. We shall now investigate the death records for Victoria on or around 10th January 1898 to see what we can turn up. Also listed was Mary Truel the 3 month old baby daughter of Adeline Truel the oldest of Charlie Treuel's daughters, Charlie and his wife Eva Treuel, Douglas John Treuel husband of Linda Pilcher, and, an unnamed stillborn baby Treuel born on 19th June 1922. We also have a copy of the cemetery plots where the graves may be found.

29th August 2000 : Keith decided to try and track down 3 other families on the Bendigo Treuel side. He managed to speak to Stan Egglestone, Kevin Egglestone and their nephew Neil Jacksone. Neil actually grew up within 1 kilometre from where Keith lived in Box Hill North, Victoria and they both attended the same High School. Whilst talking many names were mentioned from school who they both knew. Neil is about 4 years younger than Keith. Neil who has seen other genealogical info from the Egglestone side has agreed to fill in many of the gaps on the Treuel side. Thanks Neil for getting involved.

30th August 2000 : Keith decided to try and track down other families on the Bendigo Treuel side. He managed to speak to Joseph and Helen Quin and their daughter Sandra. Sandra's father-in-law Gordon is on email and has graciously agreed to accept all of the Treuel emails for Sandra. We now have an email address to get the web page, family trees and photos to Bendigo. Glad to be in contact with you guys.

31st August 2000 : It was decided to write once again to all of the Treuels in the German telephone directory who never replied to the original letter. This time Ute has kindly translated the letter written by Keith from English into German so that those who don't read English have a chance of making contact. We have also included the addresses, phone and fax numbers and email addresses (where available) of Ute, Waltraud, Dorit and Ruth (Dorit and Silvia's mum) so as to enable other German Treuels to easily make contact. Thanks for you assistance guys. If you are an Australian, German or USA Treuel, or, a member of an associated family who is reading this and hasn't made contact please do so. You will be made to feel most welcome.

1st September 2000 : Contacts between this site and members of the Bendigo Treuels and there descendents are coming thick and fast. Today we heard from Lisa Dilello granddaughter of Eva Burdett and Marilyn Burdett, Lisa's mum. They both live in Perth, Western Australia and we look forward to sharing the Treuel information with them. Keith also had a chat to Mary Speechley wife of Harold another Bendigo Treuel. Over the past 6 months we have had such an exciting time. We are thrilled to hear from everyone who has made contact and welcome you to our expanding Web of Treuels.

9th and 11th September 2000 : Today the 21 letters for the German Treuels and the 8 letters for USA Treuels were posted. We are hopeful that with the inclusion of a letter written in German, we may receive some more responses. Any Treuel from Germany or the USA reading this page after receiving a letter from Keith Treuel please make contact. We would love to hear from you.

16th September 2000 : We received an email from Keysa Truell from the USA in reply to an email sent some time back. Keysa is checking with her father to see what he knows about his family's history to see if there is a link of any sort between the two families. It could be that Truell is an entirely seperate name or this could be the Anglicised spelling of the Treuel name. Either way thanks for making contact Keysa we look forward to investigating any common ancestry.

22nd September 2000 : We received an email from Gabriella Daly (nee Treuel) from the USA replying to one of the letters sent to the USA Treuels. Gabriella is Waltraud's first cousin and her mother Gertrud is Waltraud's Aunt. They have supplied us with more information regarding the Balje Treuels. Great to hear from you guys. Thanks for making contact. I have already amended the tree and sent a copy of your email to Waltraud.

30th September 2000 : We received an email from Angela Hut (nee Treuel) on behalf of her father Albert Treuel from Cuxhaven. Angela, Peter and Albert supplied us with some family history. Albert and Angela are also Waltraud's relatives and have now supplied many dates for the Cuxhaven Treuel tree. Thanks Angela, Albert and Peter we look forward to sharing more information with you. Welcome to our growing internet Treuel family.

2nd October 2000 : We received a letter from sisters Eunice and Jeanette Treuel from Missouri. These ladies are relatives of the USA, Australian and Wedel Treuels. Their father Carl Treuel was a brother of Toby and Jim Treuel's grandfather August. They also supplied us with a tree of their family. Thanks and welcome ladies it was lovely to hear from you.

We have now found the details of when we think Ludwig Witt (Anna Louisa's father) came to Australia. A Ludwig Witti aged 25 from Prussia arrived in Australia on a ship named the Henrich in October 1856.

17th October 2000 : We received a reply email from Joe Treuel from the USA. His brothers are Toby and Jim Treuel mentioned earlier. Pleased to hear from you Joe - another long lost cousin found.

19th October 2000 : We received a letter from Harold and Mary Speechley with details of their part of the Bendigo tree. Thanks Mary I shall email the information to Maxine. Another few spaces on the tree finished.

23rd October 2000 : Whilst searching shipping arrival records to Victoria I came across a John Troicl who arrived in Port Phillip on the ship the James Baines in February 1855 aged 29. The reason for this interest is that Johann would have called himself Troiel (the German Pronunciation) and this could have been wrongly transcribed as Troicl. I can find no other record of the Troicl name anywhere. We are investigating this further.

24th October 2000 : We received two letters from overseas. One from Marie Rode in Missouri a granddaughter of the USA Claus Mathias Treuel and another from Heinz Treuel from Hemmoor Germany. Both included details of their families for our trees. We are not certain at this stage which clan Heinz belongs but we are currently attempting to find out. Thanks for making contact and welcome.

Ute, whilst attending a genealogical meeting in Bremen, met a gentleman named Uwe who is trying to help us with the link between the Treuel clans. Uwe knows of a place in Rissen which holds records of Treuels in their archives. We sent Uwe a copy of our trees today. Welcome Uwe and thanks for your assistance.

25th October 2000 : We received a letter containing family tree details from Norma Geitz (nee Treuel) and her husband Wilfred. Also included was a note from their son Richard. Hailing from St. Louis Missouri they are relatives of the Aussie and Wedel Treuels. Lovely to meet you guys - Welcome!

26th October 2000 : We received an email from Richard Geitz and his wife Barbara with a photo. I shall send everyone a copy as soon as possible. We now have an email address for the heart of Treuel country in the USA - Missouri. Great to hear from you guys!

The fabulous Ute went to another Genealogy meeting today and has found 16 records of more Treuels and Troyels from the 1600's. They show the spelling Troyel up to 1677 and Treuel from then onwards. However there is a Klaws (Klaus?) Treuel in 1629. She spent 3 hours searching the Bremen archives. I am hoping that Waltraud and Ute can come to Australia soon and spend their holiday going through the Victorian and Australian archives - they just love it. Ute and I refer to the geno bug as JHC (Johann, Hinrich, Claus) fever - be careful it is very contagious.

Gerd and Ute faxed me details from the work done by Waltraud recently. Whist I am still updating the records, Waltraud found Johann Hermann Treyel married to Metta Britten on 2/7/1721. He is the earliest forefather to the Wedel, Aussie and USA Treuels found to date. Many names and dates came with this list and the trees will be updated soon. A very special thanks to Waltraud for this wonderful effort.

9th November 2000 : We received an email from Monika another Wedel Treuel relative. Ute and Silvia had already spoken with her some days back. Welcome to our growing Treuel family Monika, it was great to hear from you.

9th November 2000 : Ute Treuel from Germany and her sister Jutta met with August (Gus) Treuel (Toby, Joe and Jim's father) at the Claremont Resort Hotel in Berkeley for 2 hours. Ute reports that they had a wonderful time. We now believe that this meeting was the first meeting between a member of Gus's family and a German Treuel since Gus's grandfather went to America prior to 1882. Fantastic news Ute - the first international meeting of the Treuels since commencing this genealogical search was a success.

28th November 2000 : Monika, her sister Ann and Ann's son Jan from Germany telephoned Keith Treuel in Australia to say hello. We believe that this is the first time an Aussie Treuel has spoken with a German Treuel since Johann Hinrich Treuel left Germany in 1855. Not bad, 145 years between chats. Thanks for ringing guys it was very exciting to take your call.

1st December 2000 : Ute emailed information from Wedel Church Baptism records which Johann Hinrich Treuel our great grandfather as being born on 10th November 1824. The records sent also list many dates of other Treuel relatives which have been added to the "Children From These Marriages" on the Wedel page. There were 6 children in Johann Hinrich's family - Claus Mathias, Maria Elsabe, Catharina Magdalena, Johann Hinrich, Jochim Hinrich 1 and Jochim Hinrich 2. Ute, thankyou, from all of the Treuel families for all of your fantastic efforts.

19th December 2000 : Eunice Treuel passed away at her home in Missouri USA. Eunice aged 72 had battled bone cancer for the past 2 years. This is a very sad end to what has been an amazing year of discovery for the Treuel family. Jeanette, Eunice's sister, wrote to say that Eunice had enjoyed hearing about the Treuel family history through her tough times. Best wishes to all of the Missouri Treuels.

23rd February 2001 : Email received from Hannah in Germany whose mother's maiden name was Treuel. We think that Hannah may be related to Waltraud and this will be investigated. Hannahs grandfather was Karl Heinrich Treuel. Welcome to Hannah and her family, we are very pleased to hear from you.

8th of April 2001 : The German "Meeting of the Clans" was held today. Waltraud, Gerd, Ute, Monika and Anne got together for the first time. During the meeting Keith rang to say hello from Australia. The "Great Treuel Get Together" was a great success but they could not find the link we have been looking for. The search continues .......

16th of April 2001 : Today Toby sent me the email address of his sister Carolyn. Carolyn, welcome to our merry band of "Treuel Hunters". We are thrilled that you can join us, and, we look forward to hearing more about your family.

6th of June 2001 : Received photos taken at the "Meeting of the Clans" on the 8th of April 2001. You now should all have a copy. Thanks Ute for sending them through.

9th September 2001 : Angela Burke from the Wonthaggi Treuels met Gerd and Ute Treuel. This is the first meeting of a German Treuel and an Australian Treuel since Johann Hinrich Treuel departed Germany for Australia in 1855. Angela and Ben also met cousins Monika & Anne Reichmann and family and Silvia, Dorit and several members of their family in Wedel. On behalf of the Aussie Treuels we thank the German Treuels for their kindness in looking after Angela and Ben so well. We really appreciate you guys. THANKS!!!!

5th October, 2001: August Treuel father of Toby, Jim and Joe Treuel passed away peacefully aged 74. Two days prior to Gus's death Keith Treuel from Australia had spoken to Gus at some length for the first time. On that same day Keith had also spoken to Jeanette Treuel (Gus's cousin) in Arizona for the first time. Two very happy occasions and one very sad occasion all in the same week. Our sincerest sympathies are extended to all of the USA Treuels.

December 2001 : It is now confirmed that John Troicl mentioned earlier was actually John Troiel who departed Liverpool England on December 9 1854 and arrived in Melbourne on February 12 1855 taking 65 days to complete the voyage. We now feel quite sure that this gentleman was our Johan Hinrich Treuel the first Treuel in Australia.

January 2002 - Monika and Anne sent a copies of letters from Claus Matthias Treuel to his family in Germany. These 9 letters available in English and German provide an insight into a determined man who went to a new land and through hard work etched a new life for himself. Copies can be downloaded from the USA page. Thanks Anne and Monika for sharing these letters with us.

March 2002 - We received emails from Carol Treuel and her father John Treuel from the USA. John Treuel moved from Geversdorf Germany to New York when he was a boy around 1945. He now resides in South Carolina. We are currently investigating to which Treuel clan John and Carol belong. John's grandfather was Gustaf Treuel from Geversdorf. Welcome Carol and John, we are thrilled that you have made contact.

June 2002 - Two more members of the Treuel family made contact this month. Shirley Volluz from the Wedel/USA Treuels wrote to us from the USA. We also received an email from Elisa Krummrich who is a first cousin of Gerd from the Osten/Isensee Treuels. Welcome ladies to our Treuel hunters collective - we are very pleased that you have made contact and look forward to hearing more about your families.

February 2003 - We received an email from Helmut Wintjen from Germany. Helmut's wife is the daughter of a Treuel and is linked via a Barthold Treuel. We look forward to receiving more information from Helmut regarding his wife's family tree. Thanks for making contact Helmut..... we welcome you to our growing family.

12th June 2003 - Thomas Treuel from Bavaria made contact. Thomas moved to Bavaria from Cuxhaven and is therefore a member of the Balje Treuels and is related to Waltraud and all the other Balje/Cuxhaven Treuels. Welcome Thomas it is wonderful that you made contact.

7th July 2003 - We discovered an area near Tangerhuette Germany where there is a geographical area called Treuel. Marion from Tangerhuette told me that in old German "treuelen" was to pull a boat through shallow waters along a river using ropes. Gerd mentioned that "ven treuelen" meant a similar thing only pulling horses using ropes. Apparantly the area Treuel is two areas of forest seperated by the river Elbe where treuelen used to take place. So all you sailors in the Treuel family.... the rope pulling part may be in your genes and you can't help being good at it... ha!

10th July 2003 - Received an email from Ross Crichton who resides in Scotland who is related to my family from the Henderson side. More details are available on the Australian Hendersons Site. Welcome Ross and thanks for the information.

1st December 2004 - Received an email from Greg Trevel whose father had recently passed away. Greg tells us that originally his surname was Treuel but it became Trevel through mispellings and common useage. We look forward to Greg providing us with information he has about his German links. Welcome Greg from all the Treuels.

22nd June 2005 - Received an email from Danny Truell an Anglo-Irish Truell. Welcome to Danny and his family. Danny stated that whilst there is no direct link between the Anglo-Irish Truells and the German Treuels it is good to keep in touch. We agree whole heartedly Danny. Please say G'day to your family from us all.

21st August 2005 - Received an email from Dave and Jean Sinclair who have supplied us with information regarding Mary Witt, Dave's great grandmother. Welcome Dave and Jean and thankyou for the information you have supplied regarding Ludwig Witt, Henrietta Witt (nee Krolker)and Mary, our Anna's sister.

On 30th December 2006 a gentleman named Hans Jürgen contacted us via email from Germany. His Great Grandmother was Margaretha Treuel Born 12/1/1867 in Wedel.
