The National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is calling on the local community to assist us in determining if the small, elusive Brush-tailed Phascogale is still found in the State’s north-west. To date, there has been only one record of this medium sized marsupial in north-western NSW and we are keen to determine if the animal still survives in the area. Understanding the distribution of the Brush-tailed Phascogale will greatly assist with planning for its recovery.

The Brush-tailed Phascogales are known to prefer drier, open forest and woodlands. They are small nocturnal, carnivorous marsupials which feeds on insects and other invertebrates as well as nectar and occasionally other small animals. Phascogales are around 40cm from head to tail with almost half the length being the tail. The tail is their most distinguishable feature with black hair that at times resembles a bottle brush.

The animal can be found at any time of year but are often most detectable in summer when the juveniles are dispersing or during the breeding season from May to June. During the breeding seasons the males can be seen as they look for mates but following breeding all the males die off. In suitable habitat they can be seen feeding in large rough-barked trees and occasionally near buildings close to their suitable habitat.

We have produced a survey brochure that explains more about the ecology of the Phascogale and assists with identification. It also includes a tear off reply paid questionnaire. To obtain copies of the brochure you can find information on our website at www.npws.nsw.gov.au. If you have any questions please email us at phascogale@npws.nsw.gov.au.
