Ghost Hero

Bill Smith/Lydia Chin series

Nothing particularly wrong here. Sense of place. Moderately snappy dialogue. Cool P.I.s taking on characters to trick culprits into revealing themselves. Humourous undercurrent. Alternate racial background (I don’t know anything about the Chinese American experience, but nothing seemed particularly jarring). Twisting plot – revealing layers along the way. Hints of romance.

But it never soared for me – nothing really made me laugh or flinch or lean in. Nothing made me particularly eager to turn the pages – but it wasn’t like I wanted to fling the book across the room or anything – it guided me home. Felt very TV – chewing gum for the brain sort of thing.
